THE DIVA FROM BAMAKO

Fanta SISSOKO was born in 1967 in Bamako from parents both Griots. Her father Bakary SISSOKO is a very famous n’goni player. Fanta’s mother, Daba TAMKARA, is also very well known as a singer.
At the age of 8, it became obvious that Fanta, among her 3 brothers and sisters, was the most gifted one for singing, and quite naturally her mother chose her to transmit the Art of the Mandingo songs and the Knowledge of the Griots.
There are many things to learn to become a Griot as Griots have the function to orally transmit the main lines of the history of families, the names of the ancestors, and the filiations. To get this knowledge only one method is given to Fanta: she has to question her father, still and still, to question her mother, tirelessly. No writing, no reading, she has to engrave it all in her memory. And nothing is to be forgotten; otherwise she has to ask again and again...
And it is sometimes still the praises and the high lights of such or such that Fanta propagates in her songs.
At the age of fifteen, Fanta sings on the occasion of important ceremonies: weddings, baptisms, etc... At this time Fanta is invited to her very first Malian TV show called “Rencontre avec nos artistes” (i.e "Meeting with our Artists"), this program brings her national recognition. From all over Mali she is asked for concerts and animations.
Videos of this period are still on air, and they actually belong to the cultural and artistic inheritance of Mali.
At that time, Fanta wasn’t much into wearing traditional boubous, and she would rather wear multicoloured skirts and hats. Her way of singing and her feeling were also very unusual as a Griot, and Fanta undoubtedly has represented a new and modern creativity in a mandingo world which rather sticks to tradition.
These are obviously the reasons which made her deserve the flattering (from the point of view of that time kids of Bamako) nickname of "Fanta Disco" under which she from now on is recognized in Mali.
____________________________During the late 80's Fanta Disco is requested by the Malian government to give several concerts for the Summit of the Heads of African States. She takes part as well in several Mega Concerts with Salif Keïta.
1990 Fanta is one of the first singers of the "Top Etoile du Mali" a group which has had a very successful story in the west of Africa.
1991: Fanta takes part in the “Great Contest of the Young Artists of Mali” with about fifty other Artists and she makes it to the final of this contest.
1992: Fanta assembles her own group with Diawara Fadiala and Moriba Koïta (one of the greatest n’goni players). Diawara is a guitarist virtuoso. He is not only an innovative musician, since he was the first to use the electric guitar in the (very) traditional mandingo music, but he also is a true Master whose very personal play inspired the admiration of all and in particular of Papa Wemba and Salif Keïta with whom he has often been playing. With Diawara, Fanta starts to write her own songs.
1992 to 1995: Her fame spreads beyond the borders. Fanta works a lot in Côte.d'ivoire.
1995: Fanta joins Diawara in France. She takes part in series of splendid concerts (in particular 3 concerts at the Zenith together with Amy Koïta and Papa Wemba with whom she sings in duet.
________________________In 1998 Diawara decides to produce her (their) album. Thanks to Babytex Ltd they record in Mali an acoustic CD with some of the best musicians.
The finalization of the project is difficult, he lacks money to finish the project properly and the marketing of part of the titles in the form of k7 and CDs is done under difficult conditions.
Time passes.
They still had the feeling that their compositions have not really been very well exploited.
In Paris they find a partnership with Moon Squad Records. Etienne Martinelli proposes them to finalize their production under the Artistic Direction of Erwan Quinio (sound engineer and producer whose achievements of up-to-date and modern production of Afro-Caraibean songs are frequently found in the french charts: "Dis leur 2 zouk" and “laisse parler les gens" (Warner) (several weeks N°1 in France during summer 2004), Slaï (SonyBMG), Magic System (Virgin).
The main idea was to make a more achieved and modern version of Fanta’s songs while keeping the instruments of the genuine Malian production.
One exception is “Sahel” which was composed by a French musician (Eric Voegelin).
The result is that surprising CD of pure mandingo music fused together with modern production techniques.
