After hitting a creative dead-end a few years back, I decided to shake things up, take a few risks, and take a bold new tack. Sure I had played in orchestras and string quartets, but I was tired of coloring within the classical lines and wanted to cross a whole bunch of musical borders. I also wanted to create music, not just perform it. And what a great ride it has been . . .First step included getting the custom instrument you see here (thanks Eric!). Match that with a powerful effects pedalboard, a looper and some recording gear, and the adventure began. The tunes posted here were all done on my e-viol, and can be performed live, not just the product of studio multi-tracking. They represent a sample of the broad musical terrain that I feel very much at home in.Next step was to hit the local scene and join a band. Ranj Singh and the Discriminators have been a great fit: excellent musicians and alot of fun to be around. Most freestyle violinists have 3 kinds of projects on the go: accoustic / folk, rock, and Eastern improvizational. With this project, I get to do all three in one package. We have played on stages all over Vancouver, and I look forward to making big musical waves with these guys.Music for film is another area I have engaged, recently finishing off the music for Kelvin Redvers' "Firebear Called Them Faith Healers". The film won Best Fiction Production at this year's Canadian Student Film Festival, so I expect it should be making the rounds in 2009. I really enjoyed this project, and look forward to doing more film work.Musical contacts I made along the way led to invitations for studio violin work on a number of recording projects. It still amazes me how an artist can email bed tracks from one part of the world, I can record violin parts in my home studio, and them email them back to the producer. Talk about technology creating opportunity! So thats the story so far . . .
