Misty Late – mystic sounds from Finland
Under the banner of Misty Late talented Finnish musicians formulate a sparkling, glimmering blend of pop rock and folk, with a dash of ancient world music mysticism injected under the surface.
Laura Eklund’s vocals and tight lyrics with JP Järvinen's vital and formidable composing and production are the foundation of Misty Late.
How did it all begun?
The concept for Misty Late surfaced when Laura Eklund started performing together with folk music pedagogue & violinist Tiina Panula. As the songwriter & producer JP Järvinen joined in Misty Late began its journey of unifying tradition with the cutting edge, forging its own brand of art as pop. Calling on the strengths of combining their very different musical backgrounds and putting the entirety of their hearts and souls into their craft they concocted an original, captivating sound. As they challenged themselves more and more, the door opened to the addition of pianist Pekka Pitkäkoski and guitarist Jartse Tuominen. The inclusion of these brought a rockier edge to the folk-pop flair of Misty Late.
Boundaries are vanishing. Genre is just a word. Misty Late is a group of friends who share the joy, passion and desire of expressing themselves in terms of music. “I guess you could say we’re kind of idealists who believe everything is music,†says Laura; Misty Late singer and storyteller.
Everything is music
Indeed, such an artistic philosophy comes out bright and clear in the song “Everything is Music,†which demonstrates Misty Late’s astounding ability to combine the hooks of contemporary pop sensibilities with thoughtfulness and classic sounds, with the end result being more substantial than standard pop anthems and more accessible to a broad audience than old school folk flavors.
Misty Late Productions
That the artists of Misty Late are responsible for their own production and songwriting – even using their own studio, the “Luxury Club†– is no inconsiderable factor in the band’s musical accomplishments.
“We write and produce our music ourselves so it represents our visions wholly and completely. Its value to us cannot be measured by audience feedback or the number of sales.â€
It is the music itself that is the gratification for these musicians.
“We’re more than happy to share it with different people around the world, and if our songs could ease somebody’s pain or offer some comfort to life’s cruel circumstances, that would be absolutely fantastic – but the goal is not really to please others, but to express ourselves. Like it or not, we’ll do it our way.â€
The beauty of it is that by doing it their way – by remaining absolutely committed to their singular vision – the members of Misty Late have pleased others.
And continue to do so.
MistyLaura - singer and storyteller
Laura Eklund began her career as a professional musician at the age of 16, first singing background vocals for others. Soon she realized that the back of the stage in the shadows was not her place.
The general manager of Eurorecords heard Laura singing and 5 minutes after she was on board. The record company gave her an artist name "Marilii" and they released few singles and one album. “Marilii†had several radio hits including "Sinun" which was No 1 at Radio TOP 20. But something wasn't right & Laura wasn’t happy. The record company decided about everything and Laura realized that most of her time she had to focus on irrelevant matters and the music started fading to the background. So she gathered up her courage and left the record company.
“Obviously, I was completely lost in music, but like everyone, I had to pay my dues, so I spent a few years trying one thing after another – all the time striving for more with intention of improving my singing, writing and playing. I guess I found my own peculiar path.â€
Indeed, and it bears its own peculiar – and gorgeous – fruits. And those fruits have been the motivation for her and her companions to continue their musical journey with the support of the fans.
