About Me

As briefly outlined in Laurie Hornsby's book, 'Brum Rocked On' , (2003), GSM, (ISBN 0-9536951-5-8), Jon's musical career began back in the 60's midlands R'n'B scene playing organ in a band with drummer Bill Ward and Guitarist Tony Iomi (the co-founders of Black Sabbath), and the house band at Birminghams first all night club - The Pitch. On returning to England, following a twelve month tour of Europe and residencies in Madrid and Frankfurt with the R'n'B Band FIRE, Jon played electric piano and organ with Kit Packhams Sudden Jump Band, The Mick Clarke Blues Band, Ex Manfred Mann Guitarist Steve Waller's Overdrive, & Hershey and the 12 Bars. Jon played piano in (ex Rolling Stone pianist Ian Stewart's band Rocket 88), performed on BBC Television with singer/songwriter Helen Webb, led his own organ trio at Greenwhich and Soho Jazz Festivals and was resident house pianist at London venues : The Space, Tufnell Park Tavern, and the Zanzibar. Jon studied jazz piano with Simon Purcell (Professor of jazz and improvisation Royal College of Music) Howard Riley (Goldsmiths College) and Gareth Williams (Middlesex University) and studied music workshop skills with Phil Mullen at Goldsmiths College whilst working alongside people with long term mental health difficulties at Tower Hamlets MIND. For the past three years Jon has been resident pianist playing two nights a week with bassist Phil Antonia at one of Londons top Time Out recognised gastrobars - the Dove FreeHouse & Kitchen, Broadway Market. The music on this site is taken from two recordings at the premises, one in 2005 with the trio AGM comprising Phil Antonia (bs) Ian McKenzie (drms) and Jon on piano, the other in 2007 with Juliette Chatterton (vcls) Kevin Dunford (bs). The knowledge, that the true hallmark of a jazz musician was their ability to compose, haunted Jon for most of his musical life and contributed to his feelings of musical inadequacy. After many years of experimenting, giving up, trying again, and voluminous scraps of discarded paper covered in seemingly incoherent and futile attempts at writing down musical ideas, Jon finally discovered a means by which to organise the music within. Showing that ' it's never too late to learn', at the time of writing, Jon is currently making final preparations to record six original compositions under the title - Bluescape.

Influences: Jon is indebted to his brother Rod who in the 50's exposed him daily to his extensive and meticulously catalogued vinyl collection of Elvis Presley, Liittle Richard, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and the other great americans of the time. This was great preparation for what was approaching Jon in the 60's, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, James Brown, The Animals, Georgie Fame, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, and in the 70's, Grace Jones, Nina Siimone, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Barbara Streisland, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Weather Report, Joni Mitchell. It was in the mid 80's onwards, and guided by Simon Purcell that Jon was to finally discover his musical heartland in the music of Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock ,Ahmad Jamal, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Joey Calderazzo, Joey Defrancesco, Brad Meldhau, and others. Towards the end of his life Jon discovered and became completely awestruck by the music of Claude Debussy.
Sounds Like: You'll really have to ask those people that have listened all those years with patience, tolerance, respect and hopefully some joy, humour and satisfaction as Jon spent literally hours, days, weeks and years pouring over scales, riffs, licks, altered scales, patterns, pentatonic scales, dissonant chord progressions and occasionally the odd tune. The atmosphere created by Jon's resident piano trio at the Space in East London has been described as "..an imtimate session.." in TIME OUT.
