It all started one day when a young man who went by the name of Perseus stumbled over a beggar. Perseus was not a big drinker, but that night he'd certainly made an impression on a bottle of wine his Auntie gave him for his birthday. The beggar too was intoxicated, but when the heavy boot of Perseus connected with his ankle, he didn't curse. Instead, he whispered something that never left Perseus. He said, "Have you found him?, Have you found Bernie Grape?". Perseus would normally have ignored a comment like this and walked away. However, overcome by curiosity and grounded by the fact that the beggar was at this point holding on to his leg, he asked him to explain. "It happened years ago" the beggar said, "what did?" Perseus replied. He continued, "The year was 1902 and Bernie Grape was just seven. His father Albert owned a vineyard in Sardinia and was well known for producing the areas strongest wine. Bernie spoke with a confused and sometimes garbled tongue and because of this, and the fact that he was only seven, his father never allowed him to taste the wine. Well, Bernie took great offence at this and one night, he crept down to the cellar and tore the wood off the top of an oak barrel. He climbed up the side of the barrel and quietly got inside. Bernie began to drink the wine and quickly got hopelessly drunk, so drunk in fact he fell asleep in the wine. The next morning, his father entered the cellar and noticed the broken barrel, all that was left inside was Bernies shoe". "Where was the boy?" Perseus asked. The beggar continued "Well, he was never found. Some say he became one with the spirit of wine and simply vanished. I know this much, he visits us, if your lips turn red from wine, Bernie's there! Talking through you until you wash it off". Perseus took a deep breath, "right, if that boy's trapped in the wine, I'm gonna get him out!" It was at this point that Perseus began his quest to help people, no matter how perilous the task. Just before he left the beggar he asked "what is your name old man?" The beggar replied, "Albert Grape". It didn't take long for Perseus to find Bernie, mainly because Bernie wanted to be found by someone just like Perseus. You see, Bernie wanted to help people too but needed a righteous person (with a taste for red wine) to give him physical form. Perseus, fuelled with good intention, needed a mind like Bernie's to stand any chance against criminals such as Tofu Tim and The 12 Egg Man, to name but two. Thus, the duo was formed!
