Linsey McDonald is a trumpeter from Fife, Scotland. Whilst in High School she studied classical trumpet at the Junior School of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Later going on to study there full-time, she gained a Bachelor Of Arts Degree with Honours in Musical Studies in 2004.
Linsey was a member of The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) between 2002 and 2006, playing concerts all over Scotland, England and Wales in many of the UK's major jazz festivals. During this time the orchestra appeared with a number of international artists, including drummer Gary Novak, pianist Geoff Keezer, tenor saxophonist Donnie McCaslin and guitarists Jim Mullen and Mike Walker, to name but a few. Linsey also played lead trumpet with the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra (TSYJO) during this time and is a former member of the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra (FYJO), The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS), The National Youth Brass Band of Scotland (NYBBS) and the Northern Junior Philharmonic Orchestra (NJPO).
At present she is studying jazz at the world renowned Berklee College of Music. In October 2007 she flew back to Scotland to play a small tour with the highly acclaimed Celtic Big Band, ‘The Unusual Suspects’ where she met and performed with some of Scotland’s top jazz and folk musicians. In July '08 she traveled to the Montreal Jazz Festival with Greg Hopkins and the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra where they performed with legendary Jazz pianist McCoy Tyner. As well as playing in the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra she is an active member of Phil Wilson's Rainbow Band, The Rainbow All-stars and Lin Biviano's Urban Outreach Orchestra. She has performed in many ensembles large and small and is very much in demand as a session musician in and out of School.
In 2008 she received the Lennie Johnson Award from the performance division and in 2009 was given the Art Farmer award by the Brass Dpeartment. As well as her Berklee WST Scholarship, Linsey is also funded by the Donald Dewar Arts Awards through the Scottish Arts Council, The Scottish International Education Trust, The Cross Trust, The Maxton Bequest and the Ian McGlashan Charitable Trust.
Linsey has been fortunate to study with such musicians as Nigel Boddice, Peter Franks, Eric Dunlea, Eddie Severn, Bobby Shew, Lin Biviano, Tiger Okoshi, Christine Fawson, Tom Plsek, Phil Wilson, Greg Hopkins, Oscar Stagnaro, Jeff Stout, and Ken Cervenka. She has taken clinics and master classes with - Wycliffe Gordon, Maria Schneider, Joe Lovano, Allen Vizutti and Vince DiMartino.
