Ma tells me I was weened on Rock 'n' Roll and born out of my time. Guess she was right, I love it and despite my absence from the scene, I've still been playing and listening to the wax I used to spin when I DJ'd.
I remember hearing Frankfurt Special when I was 8 years old and that pretty much did it for me. Elvis was king and Rock'n'Roll was all there was. Pops did try to brainwash me with country and western.... didn't work, although I did get into Johnny Cash music.
Got into the Rockabilly revival of the late 70's early 80's and started to get into the vintage stuff when psychobilly kicked in. Did the Elvis weekender in 1984 and the Elvis week that same year and every year after that for a lot of years. Won the Elvis mime in '87, played with Darrel Higham and Bob Butfoy in Sgt Bilko's Crazy Combo in '86 and again in '87 (not to be confused with Bilko's Krazy Combo, who enjoyed a lot of success at the Klubfoot at around the same time)and I'm pleased as punch to know that two of my friends have made it on the rockin' scene. Met a lot of fantastic people (including the gorgeous lady who was to become and still is Mrs Hepcat) who still remain some of my closest friends today. Had a ball too... so I'm told, I was always pissed!
Spent a lot of time at Presley's bar in Tottenham Court Road at the monthly Elvis get together hosted by the legendary Dave Richards. I'm sure there are a few incriminating stories that could come back to haunt me from those days, especially if Jake starts talkin'!!!
Started going to the Rockin' weekenders and had a spell DJing at Hemsby and the Rave whilst running a modest little club in Redhill and arranged a couple of rockin' nights at the infamous Cartoon Club in Croydon. Old age kicked in and getting back at 3am on a Sunday, every weekend does nothing for family life so I bowed out.
Getting back into the scene again and catching up with old friends. No doubt you'll see me at one club or another. Shuffle over and say "Hi" if you do, it'd be good to catch up.
