The Theory

About Me

On a particularly chilly evening during the winter of 2006-2007 when snow was falling in Tucson for several hours in a row, Aleksey Vays (drums) and Anastasia (vocals, guitar, keys) put 72 nails in their would-be practice room ceiling, while on the other side of town Alaric Weber (bass, vocals) was waiting for a phone call he was not expecting. And so The Theory came into life.Prior to that Aleksey played with several bands in Tucson including Tesoro (a flamenco-rock band), Al performed as a solo acoustic act Honeysocks, and Anastasia first with Ghetto Princess and then on her own as Harriet Brown (also acoustic). Since then together they performed original material at a few places in town, such as Belushe’s Bar & Grill, The Hut, Bashful Bandit, and an acoustic set at Epic Café. In the beginning of 2008, Jon Powell, an aspiring philosopher, joined the band, bringing in his talent on the keys along with many late-night conversations about the meaning of life. Influenced by a variety of musical genres, from BritPop to Jazz and folk, The Theory’s dynamic vocal-driven songs are melodic and expressive with brave existential lyrics and an uncommon take on chord changes. Finally, the difference in their cultural backgrounds (Aleksey is Ukrainian, Anastasia Russian, Al North American, and Jon British) adds another dimension to how their world views merge into the creation of their music.
