An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 human beings are forced, sold, or bought across international borders each year.
According to their 2005 Trafficking in Persons Report, of those trafficked across international borders for servitude and/or sexual exploitaion, approximately 80% are women and girls, and up to 50% are minors. There is a big difference between human trafficking and migrant smuggling. Migrant smuggling involves an agreement between individuals to cross an international border. Individuals who are smuggled are free to go their own way when they reach their destinations and are guilty of breaking the law.Smuggled migrants can become victims of trafficking if their ability to consent or move freely is taken away. Human trafficking victims are exploited for the benefit of the trafficker. Many trafficking victims are moved within or outside of their home countries, but transporting an individual is not necessary for trafficking. Victims of human trafficking are exploited for labor or commercial sex.Adults and children of both genders can become victims of human trafficking.
