Influences: being a kid in the sixties it was hard not to be influenced by music. after school and a little wiffle ball in the backyard, we watched the THREE STOOGES and SUPERMAN on tv, then upstairs when mom and dad came home to turn on the radio. of course THE BEATLES started it for me, what a concept of how music can matter so much. top 40 radio then was much different , everything mattered. the ROLLING STONES, THE DOORS, CREAM, it was magic. then, politics, comedy, and the 4 channels that we had on tv, set the stage for who you wanted to be IF you grow up. THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS comedy hour featured musical guests, comedians and a look at what was happening in the world around us. quetioning authority ! the viet nam era was being televised in front of us, our friends big brothers were dying, and as kids, we didnt know why. i grew up outside of Washington D.C. at the age of 14 i saw ROBT. KENNEDY get shot, i heard the rumble of army tanks as the came over the hill on new hampshire ave. on their way downtown when DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING was murdered. i was a scared little boy as i watched JAMES BROWN ask the people to stop burning down their own neighborhood. after that it was all about the music. my older brothers turned me on to motown, THE TEMPTATIONS, FOUR TOPS , STEVIE WONDER. after school when nobody was home, i pretended to play along with OTIS REDDING, SAM and DAVE, and WILSON PICKETT. a 15 year old hippie kid wanting to be STEVE CROPPER. by 1970 it was all about protesting that damn war, getting high and listening to music. by then i had figured out how to play guitar without pretending. THE ALLMAN BROS. live at the fillmore east was my destiny, i played along with that album everyday after school. then, DEREK and the DOMINOES, holy crap, i had to get the songbook to get all the chords for that incredible album. the link there was DUANE ALLMAN , he was my hero ! then, he died too....it didnt occur to me until recently how much of an influence DELANEY BRAMLETT was on all these legends who influenced my playing..he never got the credit he was due...if i had a make-a-wish, it would be to spend an afternoon sittin on a porch with a few guitars and a dobro jammin with delaney, get well soon old soul.... my introduction to the blues was from these guys, people like MUDDY WATERS, WILLIE DIXON and ROBERT JOHNSON wrote a lot of the songs i was hearing from these white guys, so i seeked out the original recordings. i found out guys like ALBERT KING and HOWLIN WOLF made these great recordings but not makin a dime from it because they signed bad recording contracts.. and there was and to many, still is bitterness over these white boys proffiting from their songs. BONNIE RAITT was this sweet lil red head who played acoustic slide guitar and sounded like an angel. in the seventies, i heard a band called LITTLE FEAT and i was hooked, not mainstream top 40, but inredible arrangements and LOWELL GEORGE slide got into my blood and is still there today . on june 28 1979 it was my birthday, i went to see LOWELL and of course, he kicked ass.. the next morning i heard on my radio alarm clock that he too, had died... since those days not much of what has come out has meant the same , bands like TRAFFIC, THE BAND, SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE, BLIND FAITH...they just dont make em like that anymore..oh this guy named STEVIE RAY VAUGHN came around...then he died...it was pointed out to me that many of my "friends" on my space are dead..."how can you be friends with a dead guy? " well they were and always will be my influences, til the day that i........ . .. MEET AND GREET WITH JJ CALE 2/09 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK125qrINn0http://www.youtube
