Inspired by the energy of rock n' roll, and educated in the contemporary jazz idiom, only to find himself performing in a number of modern folk and alt-country outfits; these are the influences that have shaped Richard Groulx's new group, 'The Co-accused'. Audiences are captured by this versatile, impassioned, energetic original act.
In November 2008, after a years’ worth of gigging, set list tweaking/expanding and recording, 'the Co-accused’ released their debut album, 'One Man Solidarity'. The reviews are in:
‘One Man Solidarity is musically varied and embodies the best of rock, folk and blues genres.’ (U of R Carillon, Nov 27th – Dec 3rd, 2008)
‘Above all, this album is easy to identify with and a good album to sing along to.’ (The Leader Post, Nov. 27th, 2008)
‘The Co-accused’ is emerging as one of the most promising new groups out of Saskatchewan. Their new track 'Final Goodbye' is currently 16 and listed as a rising star on the Saskatchewan Top 30 chart (www.thesasktop30.com).
The band was formed in late 2007 by Richard Groulx (pronounced ‘Grew’), a schooled, experienced musician and songwriter with a strong stage presence and respect for professionalism in the industry. Based on prior experience in an array groups, Groulx handpicked the finest rhythm section players; Philip Legrand (bass) and Nathaniel Bowen (drums) were selected to round out the Co-accused trio. Each possesses a decade of experience serving as sidemen in various groups.
As such, ‘The Co-accused’, which many regard as new to the scene, has the good fortune to be considered both fresh and new, as well as seasoned and professional. The band is noted for its musical diversity and ability to adapt for each gig or ‘play to the room’. 'The Co-accused' are just as comfortable in subdued lounge settings with dining patrons as they are in a rowdy Rock n’ Roll bar or on a festival stage. The plain truth is that this band loves nothing more than to perform and make a connection with their audience. The Co-accused put their heart into every performance and always leave a crowd with that magical buzzing feeling that only comes after witnessing a truly passionate live performance.
Stylistically, ‘The Co-accused’ fall under the category of Americana, meaning they are likely to borrow from styles as broad as rock, folk, the blues and alt-country. Andrew Markle of the Prairie Dog has referred to the Co-accused' sound as ‘gritty folk’.
With the release of their debut album 'One Man Solidarity', plans for a new album, an eye to festivals in 2009, and a Western Canadian summer tour, 'the Co-accused' aim to build upon the success of their recent live shows and freshly released album with a number of live shows in venues both new and old.
