The international piano competition Jazz improvizacija first took place in 1979 and was organized by the Student Representation of Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. From its very beginning the competition was something more than just a contest of musicians. During the USSR times it became a kind of dissident meeting, artistic and innocent expression of youth protest. After declaring the Independence it was a great pretext for crazy jam sessions and international friendships. In the new millenium the tradition was aborted, and was renewed only the last year.
Jazz improvizacija was, is and will be a youth event. It is nor initiated by one person, nor has its „father“ or „mother“, like big jazz festivals. Students take part in it and it is organized by students, that is why the competition is blessed to be always young and new.
Although nearly all the ex-laureates of Jazz improvizacija now are professional and famous jazzmen, the competition is not attempting to determine, who are the best and the most perspective. We just aspire to create a jazz fiesta atmosphere in a way we imagine it by our young student ears.
