Hi! My name is Harvey Milk. I was elected to Board of Supervisors in 1977, I am the first ever elected openly gay city supervisor of San Francisco, California. I was born in NY and graduated from University at Albany.
I moved to San Francisco in 1972 with my partner Scott, we were running our own camera shop when I decided to run for office. I don't want to say I failed, but I just didn't succeed... twice. Until! In 1977 I finally won!!! What can I say, third times the charm! I served as Supervisor for 11 months. I helped, trying to sponsor a gay rights bill for the City as well as the famous "Pooper Scooper" Ordinance. OH! And I also helped fight against "Proposition 6" which would have had openly gay male and female teachers be fired!
I could only imagine everything I would of accomplished if I weren't shot and killed in 1978 by Dan White. You might know White and his infamous "Twinkie" Defense, WELL he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter but was only sentenced to 7 years and 8 months, for the murder of me AND Mayor George Moscone.
