About Me

Guitarist/composer/ bandleader, Shawn Salmon , is a 2000 graduate of Eastern Illinois University's Jazz Studies program. While at Eastern Shawn studied with guitarist John McLean and performed with the award winning Eastern Illinois Jazz Ensemble. In 2002 Shawn completed his Masters Degree in Jazz Composition at DePaul University. At DePaul Shawn studied guitar with Bob Palmieri and composition and arrangement with Tom Matta. Over the years Shawn has performed with such artists as Buddy DeFranco, Ed Shaughnessy, Hal Galper, Chris Potter, Bob Brookmeyer, and Jim Snidero.Shawn has taught at Harold Washington College and Kennedy-King College in Chicago as well as teaching private guitar lessons. Shawn has been published in DownBeat Magazine and The Arizona Music Trader . Along with constantly writing and composing for his own trio he has also composed several jazz arrangements for the Morton West Percussion Ensemble.The Shawn Salmon Trio is a unique blend of the new with the old. Their influences range from traditional jazz greats such as Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, and Ella Fitzgerald, to modern artists such as John Scofield, as well as funk and soul legends James Brown and Marvin Gaye.Shawn Salmon and his various ensembles have performed throughout the Indiana and Chicago-land area at such venues including the Park West, Hothouse, Navy Pier, Indiana Museum of Art, and Pete Miller's Steakhouse.Currently Shawn is pursuing a Doctorate in Guitar Performance and Composition and is the Graduate Assistant for the Jazz Studies program at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Influences: Guitarist Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, John Scofield and Mike Stern are my major guitar influences. I'm influenced by so many jazz artist but Miles, Trane, and of course Bird are a must for me. I love the great big bands of Duke, Count and Thad and Mel. I am also influenced by a lot of local cats in Chicago like John McLean and John Moulder.But jazz is not the only musical influence. Led Zeplin, James Brown Bug Pie Willie and Stevie Wonder are a few of my favorites. The list goes on....Currently I've been really into Oz Noy and his fantastic trio. Check him out.
Sounds Like: I try to sound like a guy who can play a few right notes now and then, but that is totally subjective.
