Brewer and Chase

About Me

Blake Brewer and Chase Caillouette grew up on sun, surf and sand. Born and raised in Newport Beach, California, the two became friends when Chase got to high school in 2002. They bonded over their common bond of the beach, immediately attracted to each other’s laid-back style and insistence on unpretentious, simple living; something unique in the growing culture of The OC. Soon 16 year old Blake began bringing his guitar to school, strumming chords or piecing together songs in the quad during lunch or break times, and Chase would accompany him, adding the lyrics to classics while small crowds gathered to listen. Chase was quickly inspired to learn guitar, and lunch was the center of impromptu guitar lessons and skill development. The following year Brewer switched to a local public school, ending their lunchtime jam sessions and leaving the duo to play independently. Chase began attempting to write his own music, recording himself singing using an old 4-track recorder that was handed down from his older brother, and after hearing his own recorded voice he decided to reunite with Brewer and see what they could do together. When they finally met up for their first “recording session”, Blake too had written a song, and the two taught each other their new works. The duo was a perfect balance: what Chase lacked in guitar skills he made up for with vocal talent, and what Blake lacked in signing he made up for on the guitar. They recorded their first songs live, went back and overdubbed some harmonies, then quickly burned it to a CD and pushed it into the stereo. The two could not believe what they were listening to, could not believe what they had created, and in that moment Brewer and Chase was officially born. The duo worked for a year, writing and jamming and rewriting and singing, guitar in hand at all times, and by the beginning of the following summer they had produced a CD of 11 original songs, all recorded in Chase’s bedroom. They sent it off, along with some prints they found in Chase’s mom’s college design portfolio, and a photo of the duo taken by Chase’s older brother, and a “Jokes for Birds” was created. In August of 2005 they released the CD, selling it for 5 dollars to anyone willing to listen. Within a few months they had sold all 1,000 copies, and were approached by producer Marc Danzeisen [drummer, Riverdogs, Gilby Clarke, Hillary Duff] with an offer for a full length studio album. They worked for three months, commuting from Newport to Danzeisen’s studio in Burbank, and recorded with artists such as keyboardist Teddy “Zig-Zag” Andreas [Guns & Roses], and Danzeisen himself. Danzeisen was there to help them perfect some of their previously recorded tunes, as well as give them a venue to explore new sounds. By March 2006 the self-titled debut studio album was complete, and the 10 song demo was released on April 7, 2006. Barely six months have passed since the CD first dropped, and already Brewer and Chase have received international interest. With the completion of their album, the duo that was once only Blake Brewer and Chase Caillouette has grown to include a full band, comprised of Danzeisen on drums, Zack Singerman on bass and background vocals, and Eric Nelson on keys/electric guitar. The band spent the summer promoting their album, playing at least a show a week, regularly selling out 300-500 person venues. Brewer and Chase has grown to be a household, or surfside as the case may be, name in their hometown, and they have played for crowds as big as 3,000 people. They have headlined shows with up and coming acoustic artist and professional surfer, Timmy Curran (Foo Fighters acoustic tour), and a few of their songs recently have appeared on prime-time TV, including MTV’s popular teen reality drama Laguna Beach and Lifetime’s new show Monarch Cove.Brewer and Chase continue to write new music constantly, centering on themes of simplicity and living without pretense, self-awareness and understanding love. Their lyrics are cherished and quoted in Newport often, and slowly but surely they are gainging a world wide following via the internet with websites such as facebook.com, purevolume.com, and myspace.com. Chase and Blake take pride in their accomplishments, but most importantly they strive to remind each other to let the sun be the gold in their lives. Let the music always flow through.
