About Me

Born in the late 60’s - got skooled in the 70’s & early 80’s - found love for vinyl & made music in the 80’s - built a studio and started a record label in the 90’s - made babies in the 00’s
Still lovin’ my SL1200’s especially with Serato Scratch and my MacBook Pro it’s craaaazee fun. Lovin some wicked open source Apps for OS X particularly a fantastic PG called DJay - all Mac heads running Tiger you need to check it out!!! http://www.algoriddim.net/
Basically I’m gonna be chucking some old skool mixes up on here for you to check out - some I was part of, some I engineered and others were done by friends and/or colleagues but all are dope and well worth an earwiggin’.
Keep checking back every couple of weeks or so for gems from the days of Radio Invicta, LWR (London Weekend Radio), Solar, Lightning, Horizon and even some Radio London. I’ve been searching Hard for stuff from Medina, SoulCity Faze One and other Stations but it’s down to what I can find either on tape via eBay, car boots and through friends or contacts and what others have got on the web already which isn’t that much really.
========================================================= LATEST NEWS UPDATE!! MARCH 2008 =========================================================
You can now tune in to my brand new Radio Show on Edge FM 99.7 each and every Saturday from 10am - Midday. " The Beat Genius Show Cross the Tracks " landed on your FM dial about a month ago after I was invited to sit in for a fellow DJ friend was away in Jamaica for a month.
The station had such a huge response to The Beat Genius that they offered me my own show - basically there was no other DJ doing what I do.
You can now hear the 1st hour of my brand new radio show - Cross The Tracks here:

LWR Soul Disco Mix comes complete with static interference just to remind you of those Sunday afternoons in your bedroom when you used to fight with a coat hanger wrapped in foil as your makeshift ariel, where you had to stand still in the same position as you recorded your favorite tracks like Light of the World’s London Town or the latest Run DMC track played by people like Steve Devonne on Radio Invicta and Tim Westwood on LWR for fear of losing the best signal you’ve ever had or likely to get.......aaaahhhhh those were the days!!!
As far as I can tell the tracks that appear on this mix are:
Donald Byrd & The 125th St. Band - Love Has Come Around [cheers Ian Dewhirst]
Level 42 - Turn It On
Leon Haywood: Don’t Push It (Don’t Force It)
The Whispers: And The Beat Goes On
Human League: Don’t You Want Me
The Whispers: And The Beat Goes On
Chic: Good Times
Sharon Redd - Beat the Street (Shep Pettibone 12" mix) [cheers DJ Don Capri]
D Train: You’re the One for Me
There are a few others but I’m struggling to remember names and artsist - if you know or recognise feel free to message me them!!

My Interests

Music:

Influences: My Direct influences are 3 DJ's in particular. Kool Herc who kinda started it all for my first 2 who are some skinny kid called Flash (Grandmaster) that I saw on a BBC program called Nationwide in 1978/79 who was doing something weird with 2 record players. The other came to my attention in 1982 via Pirate Radio and a TV show, his name was Grandmixer D St. From when I saw these guys scratching and playing turntable tricks I was hooked right there and then. As more film footage came over from the states of this brand new music culture called Hip Hop, I saw other artists like the World's Famous Supreme Team who hooked up with Malcom McLaren and that really just cemented it for me!!

I used to go nick my older sisters Amstrad all in one midi HiFi when she was out and bring it in to my room where I had a powerful Marantz stack (champagne in colour of course) and I would mix my very small collection of imports via 2 seperate systems not knowing that you were meant to use a mixer. On the Esate where I grew up there were lots of older teenagers just hanging out and they would gather outside my block listening to my music, they dubbed me Lil Fat Man HiFi (I'M NOT FAT I'M STOUT!!...... and very cuddley - the more there is of me the more there is to squuze). In 1983 I did a 20 min edit using the "pause record" method of Herbie Hancocks' Rockit and took it to one of my local record shops in Wandsworth where I used to buy my imports from (the other being Record Corner) and the guy there introduced me to SL's and a mixer - this blew my mind!!! By 1985 I had saved up and bought my own set. The rest as they say is History......

My UK influences are all the DJ's that proceeded me, several of whom I know personally and have worked with so I'll start with them and then name check all the others who have impacted me.

Jazzy M, Jasper da Vinyl Junky, Martin Madhatter, Trevor Madhatter, Dave Gregory, Tony Monson, Giles Ptereson, Phil Asher, Norman Jay, Steve Wren & Patrick Forge.

The Mafia Boys - Chris Hill, Robbie Vincent, Froggy, Sean French, Tom Holland, Chris Brown, Jeff Young, Pete Tong, Bob Jones, Nicky Peck, Greg Edwards, Martin Collins, Steve Walsh, Dave Collins, Barrie Stone, Owen Washington & Ian Shaw

Daddy Ernie, DJ Elaine, Tim WestWood, Stevie Devonne, Bob Jones, Greg Wilson, Fuzzy Dee, Ron Tom, Barry B, Gordon Mac, Joey Jay, Femi Fem, Roy the Roach, Judge Jules, Paul Anderson, Danny Rampling, Lindsay Wesker, Steve Jackson, Colin Dale, Jay Strongman, Fabio, Chris Nat, Miss Bliss, Jumpin' Jack Frost, Dave Gregory, Groove Rider and the list goes on and on for all the pioneers that helped forge the UK music scene throughout the 70's & 80's by broadcasting the Funk and soul as well as finding venues for the music lovers to go to and bug out.

If i have missed anyone out (which I'm sure I have my apologies but as I remember or get reminded you will be checked!!)

This is my homage to all those that came before me and all those that continue to rock on the one and two's

Long Live vinyl - although Serato Scratch/Final Scratch does save me messing up my collection any further than it already is.

Respect to all those who have passed and all those who continue to spin

Sounds Like: Brit Funk, Jazz Funk, Soul, Disco, Rare Groove, Boogie, Electro Funk, Electro, Electronic Jazz, from the 70's & 80's
Record Label: Debu Records
