Influences: My Direct influences are 3 DJ's in particular. Kool Herc who kinda started it all for my first 2 who are some skinny kid called Flash (Grandmaster) that I saw on a BBC program called Nationwide in 1978/79 who was doing something weird with 2 record players. The other came to my attention in 1982 via Pirate Radio and a TV show, his name was Grandmixer D St. From when I saw these guys scratching and playing turntable tricks I was hooked right there and then. As more film footage came over from the states of this brand new music culture called Hip Hop, I saw other artists like the World's Famous Supreme Team who hooked up with Malcom McLaren and that really just cemented it for me!!
I used to go nick my older sisters Amstrad all in one midi HiFi when she was out and bring it in to my room where I had a powerful Marantz stack (champagne in colour of course) and I would mix my very small collection of imports via 2 seperate systems not knowing that you were meant to use a mixer. On the Esate where I grew up there were lots of older teenagers just hanging out and they would gather outside my block listening to my music, they dubbed me Lil Fat Man HiFi (I'M NOT FAT I'M STOUT!!...... and very cuddley - the more there is of me the more there is to squuze). In 1983 I did a 20 min edit using the "pause record" method of Herbie Hancocks' Rockit and took it to one of my local record shops in Wandsworth where I used to buy my imports from (the other being Record Corner) and the guy there introduced me to SL's and a mixer - this blew my mind!!! By 1985 I had saved up and bought my own set. The rest as they say is History......
