About Me

Nat is a versatile acoustic guitarist and oud player living in Portland, OR. His music combines his background in flamenco guitar with elements of jazz, bossa nova, and Middle Eastern music.Nat was born in Portland, OR to an Indonesian father and an American mother. He began studying guitar with guitarist/composer Paul Chasman at age seventeen. He was soon introduced to flamenco guitar by Jose Solano and continued to study with Tarik and Julia Banzi of the group Al Andalus. This led him to pursue his interest in the influence of Arabic music on flamenco with study in Morocco. After returning to the US, he moved to Seattle to study ethnomusicology at the University of Washington. There he worked with the groups Carmona Flamenco, The Rez Quartet and others ranging in style from Hungarian Csardas and Gypsy swing to flamenco. In 2000 he co-founded the Vancouver, BC based Arabic/flamenco group Aire with ney player and singer Emad Armoush. He now resides in Portland where he performs with Shabava, The Nat Hulskamp Trio, The Greg Wolf Trio, and in a guitar duo with Chris Mosley. Nat also plays at El Gaucho every Tuesday and Saturday with jazz guitarist John “JB” Butler, and on Fridays with flamenco fusion guitarist Toshi Onizuka. Recently he has also been performing in concerts out of town with the legendary Persian singer Dariush. For more info please visit Nat's website, http://www.nathulskamp.com , and Shabava's website (Persian, Arabic and Indian trio) http://www.shabava.com
