About Me

¡Cantina Latina! is a new monthly Spanish (and occasionally Portuguese) film and conversation night at the Star & Shadow Cinema, Byker. Taking place on the mid Wednesday of the month it is a place for students and native speakers to get together to watch a film in its original language, meet others to talk in Spanish (or every third month Portuguese)Films will be screening in the relaxed area of the Star and Shadow Cinema’s bar and social space where beer and tapas will be served to encourage conversation. Films will be screened at 7pm and conversation will be after the screenings, around 9pm.On Wednesday 16 May we start with the Mexican film Como Agua Para Chocolate (Like Water For Chocolate) adapted from Adapted from Laura Esquival’s novel. Which follows the story of Tita whose domineering mother who forbids her to marry. However Tita’s passions manifest themselves through her cooking causing the people who taste her food to experience what she feels.The second screening on Wednesday 13 June is a Cuban animation Vampiros en Habana (Vampires in Havana).Cantina Latina diversifies to Portuguese as we go to Brasil, on Wednesday 18 July with this story in the same vein as Brazilian cinema classics City Of God and Favela Rising. Based on a true experiences Radio Favela follows the lives of a group of friends who dream of running a pirate radio station by and for the residents of the favela in which they live. The four young boys set up a community radio station that shouts at the world the voice of the voiceless, and express their reality and music7pm, Weds 16 May – ¡Cantina Latina!
