___ANGELA TEEK is a stunning, sleek beauty whose looks are overshadowed only by her gorgeous singing voice and vivacious stage personality. An extremely versatile entertainer, Angela breathes a special life into each song taking full advantage of her 3-octave range. She impresses audiences all over the world not only because of her control of a lovely high register but because she can immediately swoop into a throaty low that is extremely sexy.
As a child, Angela’s natural talent and passion to perform was abundantly
evident. Her penchant for show business was enriched from watching all those movie musicals on TV. After moving to Southern California from her native Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Angela met her teacher and mentor, showbiz veteran Leonard Reed. Her first professional break came when she was cast opposite Sherman Hemsley in “Norman, Is That You?†at the Hacienda Hotel in Las Vegas. Show business fortune continued to shine with a leading role in “Ain’t Misbehavin†starring Hinton Battle at the Sahara Hotel.
The industry was now taking notice and Robert Townsend cast Angela in a leading role in his break-through feature film, “Hollywood Shuffle.†Back on stage, Angela continued to perfect her nightclub act and quickly became a much sought-after headliner on numerous cruise lines. In time, an audition for a new TV talent competition show called “Star Search†opened a whole new door. Her first weekly win lead to a second and continued for ten consecutive weeks. Upon winning the final competition Angela was awarded a Grand Prize of $100,000 as Top Female Vocalist. Legendary producer David Merrick took notice and soon cast her in the title role of his Broadway production of the George Gershwin musical, “Oh, Kay!†In his review of that
production, famed NY critic Jeffrey Lyons wrote, “The show was stolen, I mean robbed blind, by Angela Teek. Remember that name.†Angela had a second foray on Broadway as “Sara†in the Tony Award winning musical “Ragtimeâ€.
Angela later took her Gershwin experience to the symphony circuit in a George Gershwin/ Cole Porter tribute. One stop broke all attendance records with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. A subsequent Las Vegas engagement included a lengthly stint with funnyman Don Rickles at the Golden Nugget Hotel On television Angela’s credits include guest starring roles on “Mr. & Mrs. Smith†(CBS) with Scott Bakula and “The Burning Zone†(UPN), as well as a co-starring role on “Baywatch“. Additional theatre appearances include “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coatâ€, “Beehive†and “You Never Know†for which she was nominated for an NAACP Best Supporting Performance Award. Angela has been the featured vocalist with the highly-acclaimed international dance production show “Burn
the Floor†since January 2002. Recently, Angela wrote, mounted and starred in a new production called “Hey, I’m Tha Mamaâ€, with her mother veteran jazz singer Spanky Wilson. Critically acclaimed, the show won an Ovation Award from the L.A. STAGE Alliance and a Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP Theatre Award.
In her first solo recording “Steppin’ Outâ€, just released, Angela includes torch
songs delivered with true emotion and lyrical force and up-tempo temperature heaters with a Broadway flair. Other recordings include the Broadway cast album of “Ragtimeâ€, the world-premiere cast album of “You Never Know†and featured vocalist on acclaimed composer John Adams’ CD, “I was Looking at the Ceiling and then I saw the Sky†(Nonesuch Records) with various artists including Audra McDonald and Marin Mazzie.
