When the Wirtzels gathered together in June 2008 to record a new CD, little did they know what was about to transpire. They had hopes to follow up the legendary "A Noise in A" from the 2007 Jillfest sessions with something special and sat down to put together their new sounds.
What happened next will go down in Wirtzel folklore. Over the next 45 minutes they produced some of the greatest music ever heard. Playing off each other's musical strengths they jammed and improvised in the key of D. There was bluegrass, there was old-time, there was folk, there was free-form jazz. It was immense. It was pure. It was a religious experience for all who witnessed it.
Unfortunately, they forgot to press "record" and this session was lost forever. They immediately tried to recreate the glory but it was forced, lacking in spontaneity and it was, quite frankly, a bit rubbish. This time they remembered to record it and that is what you will find on Wirtzolatry. It'll do. But it's nothing compared to those momentous 45 minutes of utter musical genius that have vanished from history.
The Wirtzels and their fans will forever rue that day in June 2008 when what could have been sadly never was. Perhaps fate has decreed that it never will be. But the Wirtzels are still young, still hungry and still raring to produce that spark of magic. Watch out for the Wirtzels, but don't sit too close to them, it can be intimidating.
"When I think of the Wirtzels, I think of classic (not classical) music. I think back of when I was a small boy of 48, and the effect the Wirtzels had on me. I still have not recovered, but I am honored to be a part of their music, their culture, and yes.... their legend. The T shirt is pretty cool too, and so far the decal hasn't peeled off the front." - John Lowell
"Are The Wirtzels a band or just a concept? It's like if they didn't exist someone would of had to have invented them." - Tall Paul
