About Me

This page is dedicated to the memory of Strawberry Recording Studios in Stockport, which existed from 1968 until 1993.It was founded by Peter Tattersall and Eric Stewart (of The Mindbenders) who then brought Graham Gouldman on board too. Stewart and Gouldman were joined by two more local musicians, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, and gave the Studio its big break in 1970 when, as Hotlegs, they created the hit single 'Neanderthal Man'. After working with Neil Sedaka at Strawberry on two of his albums in the early 1970s, the quartet of musicians decide to record for themselves and became 10cc, producing hit after hit at Stockport until 1976 (including the famous 'I'm Not In Love') and invested most of their money back into the Studio. Other artists who used Strawberry in this period included Barclay James Harvest, Syd Lawrence and his orchestra, Paul Mccartney and St Winifreds School Choir.By 1976, Strawberry had become so successful that 10cc had to build a new Strawberry (in Dorking, Surrey) so that they could record their own material but Stockport's Strawberry continued to attract pop's big names, including Joy Division, The Buzzcocks, The Smiths, Simply Red, The Stone Roses, James and many of the Factory label acts. Indeed, legendary producer Martin Hannett often used Strawberry for recording or remixing. In the mid-1980s, Strawberry was taken over by the neighbouring Yellow 2 Studio but retained the Strawberry name. Sadly, in an industry in which it was often a struggle to keep up with the ever-changing technology, Strawberry closed down in 1993.http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/staff/peter.wadsw orth/pwstrawb.htm
