Bio

Jean-François Charles is a composer, a clarinetist, and a live electronics designer. He was born in 1974 in Haute-Savoie, France. He holds an engineering degree from INSA in Lyon (National Institute for Applied Sciences).

Clarinets

He studied clarinet with Armand Angster at the Strasbourg Conservatory from 1999 to 2005. In 2003, he participated in the world premiere and recording of Rechter Augenbrauentanz , under the direction of the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen .
In 2007, he performs the " seven clarinet recital ", with a program including jazz, classical and contemporary music on clarinets ranging from piccolo clarinet in Eb to contrabass clarinet , from basset-horn to electronic wind instrument.

Composition

He studied composition in Strasbourg with Ivan Fedele. He has taken part in the Acanthes Music Festival in 1998 with Sofia Gubaidulina , in 1999 with Helmut Lachenmann , and in 2000 with IRCAM .
Ensemble Accroche Note , who commissioned his piece Magma for contrabass clarinet, stones and live electronics, premiered it in Dresden in 2003.
His work Aqua for solo double bass, clarinet, aquaphone and live electronics has been premiered in Florence, Italy, in the French Cultural Center and Consulate in 2004.
In Harvard, he has studied during several months with each of the following composers: Chaya Czernowin , Magnus Lindberg , Julian Anderson , Joshua Fineberg , Gunther Schuller , Brian Ferneyhough , Helmut Lachenmann . Live electronics
He learnt electronic interactive music in Montbéliard from 2002 to 2005 with Hans Tutschku and Jacopo Baboni Schilingi.
He has been a member of the Prisma group (International Pedagogy and Research on Assisted Musical Systems) within which he has given presentations in Florence, Paris (Ircam), and more.
In March 2007, he was invited to give a five day seminar and workshop on "Spectral sound processing in real-time with Max/MSP/Jitter " at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
In April 2008, he was invited at Brandeis University to teach a 2-session workshop on Phase Vocoder and Freeze effect with Max/MSP/Jitter.

From 2001 to 2005, Jean-François led the Ensemble New Flore (clarinet, percussion, double bass, dancer and computer). They performed in Krakow, Geneva, Lyon, Strasbourg, a.o.
He learns labanotation .
He is a PhD candidate in composition, in the Music Department of the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences .
In 2005, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, as well as a Sachs Fellowship.
As a conductor, he occasionally conducts his compositions. He has been leading the Dudley House Big Band since Fall 2007.
He published the score of Bleu 3 in February 2008 and encourages composers to publish their scores .
