Crimson Clover is a five piece band formed shortly after another band called Volgate broke up. The band began in March of 2007. The band’s lineup consists of Ryan Williams on Lead Vocals, Mike Grasty on Lead Guitar, Sam Dudick (Crash) on Rhythm Guitar, Joe Raysinger on Bass, and Matt Amend on Drums. The Band's sound is derived from the basic, minimalistic sound of the early Punk Rock movements, as well as later punk movements such as the 90's Nirvana and Sonic Youth sound. Crimson Clover also has the sound of early pop bands such as the Beatles, only heavier. The band's sound also unifies the feel of different heavy metal movements such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest sounds. The band also has a hard rock feel to their sound, much like Guns N' Roses.
Each member of the band has a unique style that adds to the band's music. Ryan’s vocal style is very versatile in the sense that his vocals are similar to a mellow John Lennon, but can get as serious and intense as James Hetfield or Rob Halford. His vocal range is very large, and his lyrics are meaningful. Mike Grasty’s Lead Guitar style is a mixture of punk rock/thrash metal riffing like Kurt Cobain. His soloing style is a unique mixture of Blues and Neo-Classical. It's like a cross between Slash and Randy Rhoads. Sam Dudick has a very distinctive style of playing similar to Slash. He also has many underground influences, such as Jerry C, known for a rock arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon in D. Pop-punk bands from the 90's also have a big impact on Sam's unique style, molding the bands sound together. Joe Raysinger has a complex bass style, similar to that of Matt Freeman of Rancid. His style also adds a nice pulse to the band's songs, keeping the rest of the band running smoothly, and intensifying the songs. Matt’s drumming style is very tight fit and puts it all together. Matt can really hit the drums hard with power and precision like Dave Grohl, but uses fills that are quick, yet steady.
