Formed in Dublin during the Winter of 2005, the seeds that eventually went on to form the act now known as Viraetas were sown. The co-founders David Durran and Kevin O’ Connor were both driven by a need to form a band that adhered to only what they wanted. Influenced as much by life and the world that surrounded them as well the music they loved, the goal has, and always will be to write aggressive, memorable and most importantly enjoyable music. The band themselves in certain ways can be said to exhibit traits both in tandem of, and opposing their namesake. In their eyes, you are your own saviour, and by way of having a belief in straddling the line, being ambiguous and not working in black or white, they are defining the title completely and yet oppositely. For the better part of a year, being plagued by line-up changes and members with a lack of drive, David and Kevin persevered and recruited long-time good friend Stuart Bannon on bass guitar. This was the true beginning of the band. While lacking a stable drummer, the trio knew they had a certain sound that could only be built upon. It was after trying a number of drummers that David Fay was recruited. The four show a common drive, a certain common ground that is evident in their music. Tempo changes, helter skelter riffage, leads and guitar layers, crashing drums, resonant bass and spitfire vocals are all on show here. The quartet believes it has its greatest potential now more than ever to fulfil the initial goal. Influences are wide and varied for the entire band. Anything from Tool esque progression to At the Gates style venomous death metal is enjoyed and utilised. Whatever sounds good to their ears and helps the ebb and flow of the song is used. Lyrically, O’ Connor tends to be somewhat open, getting his point across while allowing for interpretation on the reader’s part. Anything can be thrown in the melting pot. The band is now poised to attack the goals of gigging as much as possible, the release of material and ultimately establishing themselves as a band in the Irish underground.
