About Me

BAZILLUS - AD HOC LIVE CLUB

Bazillus, Zurich's legendary ad hoc music club, was founded in 1969 by drummer and graphic designer Beat Kennel. After various location and name changes, one of the city's first underground music clubs soon became a magnet for the local and international jazz and experimental groove music scene.

By the turn of the century, not only the whole elite of the Swiss music scene had passed through the club (George Gruntz, Franco Amrosetti, Jojo Mayer, Harald Haerter etc. ), also international stars like Art Blakey, Billy Cobham, Dexter Gordon, Don Cherry, Eddie Harris, Elvin Jones, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Jean-Paul Bourelly, John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Sun Ra, Tony Williams, Yusef Lateef and many others had taken a liking in the unique and creative atmosphere of the club.

After the Bazillus closed in 1987 (it had been an "illegal" club all along), Kennel and his team officially re-opened the club in 2004 at it's current location near Zurich mainstation.

Once again the Bazillus has become a hub for the local and international music scene, with a whole range of musicians, projects and bands experimenting in an ad hoc setting, among them: Jean-Paul Bourelly, Steve Grossman, Gene Perla, Big Zis, Lexx, Nurotic Soundsystem, Lauschangriff, Freeform Arkestra, Arkstar, W*U*D*U, Flava Sauce, Vault, Kung Fu Horns, Valentino Tomasi, Adrian Weyermann, Adrian Stern, Nya, Infinite Livez, Stade, Swiss Indian Orchestra...

The Bazillus Thursday night concerts dogma:
