Checo Alonso

Two-time Grammy Award winner, Sergio “Checo” Alonso is one of the most recognized Mexican folk harpists in the United States as a member of the world-renowned, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano. During his career, Checo has performed in some of the most prestigious performing arts venues in the United States and Mexico including The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City and Palacio Bellas Artes in Mexico City, and has accompanied numerous Mexican and Latin music recording artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Carlos Santana, Jose Feliciano, Vikki Carr, Mariachi Cobre, Aida Cuevas, Marco Antonio Muniz, Guadalupe Pineda, Angeles Ochoa, Pedro Fernandez, Lucero, Eugenia Leon, and Jose “El Puma” Rodriguez . Two of his most memorable came during the 75th Annual Academy Awards when he accompanied Caetano Veloso and Lila Downs as they performed music from the soundtrack of the Oscar nominated motion picture “Frida” and with the Los Angeles Master Chorale for the world premiere of "A Map of Los Angeles."In addition to performing with traditional Mexican ensembles, Checo has toured and/or recorded with other renowned artists and groups (Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Little Feat, Ry Cooder, and Paddy Maloney) and he has worked on several Hollywood films, including “Price of Glory,” starring Jimmy Smits, “Man on Fire” and “Déjà Vu” starring Denzel Washington, and “Walkout,” directed by Edward James Olmos.Checo's honors and awards include being a featured artist on the 2005 Grammy Award-winning album, “cELLAbration: A Tribute to Ella Jenkins,” the 2006 Grammy Nominated album for “Best Mexican Album,” “Llegaron Los Camperos: Concert Favorites of Nati Cano's Mariachi Los Camperos,” and the 2008 Grammy Award-winning album for "Best Regional Mexican Album," "Amor, Dolor, Y Lagrimas." In 2006 he was awarded the Master Musician Fellowship by the Durfee Foundation.
