Once upon a time there was a young girl named Ashley, born August 9th 1983 in Pikeville, KY. Ashley was this sweet little daddy's girl who thought that she could get away with anything. She lived in a 2 bedroom trailer with her mommy, daddy and papaw. She had two cats and 2 dogs. Her mommy worked as a nurse at the local hospital so Ashley was always getting to spend time wih her daddy and papaw. She would sometimes ride on the tractor as her daddy pushed it through the garden. She thought she had the best life in the world, that was until her mommy told her some sad news. Ashley was around 7 when she found out that her daddy had cancer. Of course, she didn't fully understand that much about it. One time when her mommy had to shave her daddy's hair off he had her promise that she wouldn't laugh, but she couldn't help it. He looked like the Mr. Clean man! Time passed by and her mommy had to stop working at the hospital to stay home and take care of her daddy. One day Ashley was playing at a friends house when her mommy called and asked her to come home. Ashley jumped on her bike and arrived to see guest at her home. Her mommy then took her into her bedroom and told her that her daddy had passed away. Ashley was sad, but was to shy to cry in front of people. At the funeral she didn't really pay attention to what was going on and instead played outside with her friends. Today Ashley feels bad that she didn't get a chance to say goodbye to her daddy and tell him how much she loved him. Then, not too long after her daddy died, her papaw died too. Now it was just her and her mommy. For awhile her mommy didn't go back to work and as Ashley got older they would argue a lot. Whenever things got bad Ashley would always cry for her daddy.
Fast forward to 1997. Ashley and her mom had grown closer over the years since her daddys death. She felt should could tell her mom almost anything. They still argued, but things were better. Her mommy had changed her entire life around. Her mommy used to drink a lot and go hang out with her friends, until she got into a car accident. After that her mommy stopped drinking. Then her mommy had to give up smoking because she had a heart attack. After the heart attack, her mommy had to always have a bag of fluid attached to her chest while she waited for a heart transplant. Ashley didn't think to much of it because things were better now. He mommy wasn't drinking or smoking and she even got involved in the local church with Ashley. One day Ashley and her mommy where at church cleaning when her mommy's friend came down to tell her that they had a heart for her and she needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible. It was a very crazy night for Ashley because she had to see her mommy get taken away in a helicopter. Ashley stayed with her cousin so that she could finish 8th grade and then for the summer she would stay with her aunt and uncle in CT while her mommy was getting better in the hospital. She did get to visit her mommy a couple of times before she had to leave. It was sad to see her mommy in a hospital bed, but Ashley just kept telling herself that things were going to be better now.
Fast forward to July 8th 1997. That day Ashley was going to go with her aunt to visit her grandfather because he wasn't doing to well. After the first stop they made her aunt said to her "You know your mom isn't doing to well right?" Ashley said yes and didn't understand why her aunt would say that. When they arrived at her grandfathers, she had Ashley go sit in his room and just keep him company. Every now and then her aunt would come in and check on her, but Ashley could tell something wasn't right. She just felt it. Then at one point in the day her aunt asked her to come into the kitchen. When she walked in she noticed that her uncle and other aunt and uncle were also there. Then Ashley heard 5 words that would always repeat in her head, "Your mom has passed away". Ashley doesn't remember to much after that because she was really sad. She lost her best friend and now she felt like an orphan all alone. The next thing they did was head back down to KY for the funeral and pack up all of Ashley's things to bring back to her new home in CT. Ashley was really sad to leave behind the only life she had known along with her family and friends. They couldn't stay too long in KY because Ashley's grandfather wasn't doing well at all. Then about one week after her mommy's funeral, her grandfather passed away. Ashley didn't know how much more she could take, but she new she had to be strong. It was what her mommy would want her to do.
