From Schoolgirl to Fashion Designer…From an early age I had always enjoyed Art & Design. I loved seeing my grandmother’s paintings she did in her spare time.
It was as a pupil at King James’s High School in Almondbury, Huddersfield where my love and skill for art and design progressed. At school I chose to study Art and D&T Textiles at GCSE level, knowing that I either wanted to do Interior or Fashion design. I loved these two lessons, in particularly my textiles class with Miss Stubbins. My interest in both interior and fashion design led me to look at BTEC courses at Batley School of Art & Design, part of Dewsbury College. After looking at both courses and meeting with the tutors it became clear to me what my career path was going to be, FASHION! I enrolled on the two year BTEC National Diploma in Fashion Design at Batley where I feel I learnt a huge amount of most of what I know today. Especially in Pattern Cutting, I had an excellent tutor, Mrs Sylvia Brammell, if there was anything to know about pattern cutting, Sylvia was the woman to ask! I loved working with Sylvia, there was so much to learn from her. I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor.
After successfully completing my ND with very good marks I knew that I wanted to go on to do a BA Honours course. I looked at the degree at Huddersfield University which the first two years were spent based at Batley. I also looked at a degree at Central St Martins in London. After seeing St Martins and the description of the course I decided that it wasn’t right for me. I felt that the course at Huddersfield had much more to offer in terms of technical ability. I wanted to cover the whole spectrum of the fashion design process, as I believe a good designer needs to have an understanding on all the aspects of the design process from concept to finished garment. The BA (Honours) Fashion Design with Marketing, Promotion and Manufacture course did just that. It was a three-year course with an optional ‘sandwich’ year for work experience. It also gave me chance to work with Sylvia once more before she sadly passed away while I was in my second year of the degree.
