Biography
Filip Davidse has completed both his Bachelor and Master studies in classical saxophone at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he studied with Henk van Twillert. Besides that he has a Master degree in theoretical physics, which he studied at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. He regularly performs both in Holland and abroad, and collaborates with, among others, the pianist Naomi Tamura (Naomi and Filip form the duo "OPUS35") and the composer and yangqin player Kim Ho Ip. Besides playing and teaching he also composes, and in doing so focuses mainly on jazz at the moment.
He is not only interested in classical, contemporary and jazz music (he plays in the jazz formation “IKKIâ€), but also in non-Western music. And then specifically in music (both contemporary and traditional) from Japan and China. He, for example, gave masterclasses on Japanese music at the conservatory of Porto, Portugal. ANd he has been playing a lot of Chinese related music in The UK, with people from the iMAP ensemble, have a look at: www.imapimap.com
Together with Kimho Ip he recorded the album "Runaway Horses", Chinese music played on saxophone and yangchin. And with Naomi Tamura he recently released the CD "The Soviet Saxophone". An unique program, pieces written for saxophone and piano in the former Soviet Union, notably Moscow in the seventies and eighties. These composers wanted to express themselves more personally, instead of following the official guidelines. This resulted in beautiful and individual music. Naomi and he perform this music in many venues, look at www.opus35.com .
With IKKI he recorded the album "Riot's Eve", check out www.ikkimusic.com for more details.
