"Gannets whip up a rumbling cacophony" - THE GUARDIAN
"Gannets were one of the highlights of the Vortex London Jazz Festival with their extended improvisations that lurch between the sublime and the rediculous" - TIME OUT
WATCH GANNETS!! This is a rare glimpse, an obscure live video from an appearance at London's finest underground music and poetry club 'Boat-Ting' from 2006. The picture quality is poor but it's all worth it for the sound...
GANNETS live at London's Monto Water Rats April Fools Day 2009.
GANNETS emerged out of London's improvised and experimental music circuit. They started playing occasional gigs at the legendary north London film and music club 'The Klinker' in c.2004. Prior to this time Christopher Cundy (bass clarinet), still based in Cheltenham, established a space for experimental music called 'The Birdsnest' with the help of Fyfe Hutchins (keyboards, electronics & toy instruments) who, at the time, was working as a jazz entertainer at a commercial night club in Cheltenham. 'The Birdsnest' was set up in a small children's theatre in the town with the idea of promoting unusual and experimental music performances that often incorporated theatre props and homemade films or slideshows. Cundy also occasionally played with Alex Ward (clarinet) at small clubs in London and it was through playing ad-hoc gigs on the capitols small but dedicated scene that both Hutchins and Cundy also met Dominic Lash (double bass) and Steve Noble (drums). GANNETS were established out of a need not only to achieve a full band sound but also to inject the free improvisation scene with an urgent sense of melody and a genuine playfulness.
