I am a pro bassist/amateur recording engineer with a day job as an office furniture technician/installer. People that I play music with always want me to sing, because I have a deep voice, but I really don't like singing while playing bass. I would rather use my voice for voiceovers.
After many years of dating women who didn't understand my passion for music, I finally met Hilary Harris, a jazz singer who has a goofy personality like mine. I guess it takes a musician to understand one.
Since I have eclectic taste in music, I have always been involved with several different bands at the same time. I play in a 12 piece '70s & early '80's Funk/Disco cover band with a real horn section called Sonic Funk. I also play with a cover band called Triple Shot, that does Classic Rock and some newer stuff, as wel. I also play Jazz & Brazilian Standards with vocalist/girlfriend Hilary Harris. I played with a band called The Ho, which was a tribute to/parody of The Who, off & on between 1997 & 2004 (See photos). For original projects, I play with a funky/folky quartet called Decateur Buff with Sandra the flute player from Holly's Crush, in a Rock/Americana quartet called the Good Lieutenants with Colby Imus (who I played with in the band Guilty As Hell), and a couple of times a year with a power trio in Eugene called Demimonde Slumber Party. All of these music projects are in my top MySpace friends.
When Jazz musicians hear me play for the first time, they always ask if I play upright bass. I can, but I don't enjoy it like I do the electric, and currently do not own one. I do have a custom built fretless acoustic bass guitar that sounds a lot like an upright, but with more clarity and sustain. Everyone seems to like the sound of it, but it looks to them like something used on MTV's Unplugged.
