About Me

Hello and Welcome to The Music Web-page for Dr. Smith Productions. A two man production team with years of experience from the East Coast, West Coast, and Bay area.
Daryl A. Smith (aka Hood), former keyboardist of the band "Jady Kurrent", has lived and worked in LA for the last 13 years. He's had the good fortune of working in the field of Film & Television, including MCA Records and MGM Studios. The knowledge and experience Daryl has gained has made him one of the most professional talents in Los Angeles.
He started at the very bottom in promotions at MCA working for Louil Silas Jr's department sending out promo-pacs on Heavy D, Bobby Brown etc. He's come a long way since then.
"The 48 Hour Film Series" was his calling. Indy Filmmaker Julie Ann Lucas asked Daryl to do the music for her short films, and that began a series of filmmakers ringing his phone. Dr. Smith Productions was born.
Word began to spread and it wasn't long before opportunity met with preparation again in the form of a play. Playwright Stephan Barnes debuted his play "Ladies Choice" in Hollywood, and the two buddies put their talents together for an unexpected great 4 week run.
Having met and talked with some of LA's great writers like Mark Mancina, Michael Lloyd, and Alex Wurman, Daryl began to upgrade his writing skills.
Enter Mike Kelly (aka Gdiz). Random conversation turned these two into fast friends and writing partners. You can check out Mike at [email protected], and see why Daryl partnered up with this amazing writer/producer.
Daryl is currently producing an album for guitarist Darlene Moreno, as well as writing for film and television. Mike is producing an inter-continental group called "The Mixx", as well as creating for "Women In Film". Mike has Gold Records for Mark Wahlberg, and his vocal coaching experience includes B2K and Omarion. He's worked on feature films with MGM as well.
Attention to professionalism, consistency in fresh ideas, ability to work in time frames. These are just a few of the things that separate these two from the rest!

ARTISTS ON ROSTER:

Influences: Our influences were the greats of our day...Prince, Michael Jackson, James Brown, The Time. But also, all of the great musicians I've met who you will never know. The musicians who could play their asses off and hoped to be better.

Our influence was "Good Music", and growing up at a time when Music itelf was still growing. Rapper's Delight, Run DMC, Hall & Oats, The Eagles, The Cars, U2, and The Stones.
MTV wasn't out yet, and my other influences were the people who could tell a song was great even though the recording was bad.

Our influences were my brothers Greg & Kalvin rapping to girls while listening to 8 trk tapes, and my Mom and sister Michelle dancing through the house to Soultrain.

Musicians today always try to stay "young" in order to stay "hip". However, if you're in your 30's or 40's, you got to see "hip" being created. Youth today are just copying what we saw come from nothing.

We are young, young at heart and that's the best influence.

Sounds Like: This category is a "BIG PROBLEM" to me because if everyone tries to sound like the current hit or Flavor of the month, where will creativity come from. Hopefully our sound is liked by the masses, but we hope it is unique whether we're doing Pop, R&B, Jazz, Hip Hop, or Film & TV.

Imitation is the biggest form of flattery and it's easy to sound like someone else. The hard part is taking that leap of faith to be different.

"Prince" didn't sound like "Michael" and "The Beatles" didn't sound like "The Stones".
