THE GRACEFUL FAILURES are an exciting acoustic band featuring longtime Knoxville musician Scott Sokoloski (a.k.a. ScottSki) and emerging talent Jean-Louis Lawson. Although friends for years, ScottSki and Jean-Louis were engaged in different projects which kept them both with busy schedules. However, after a few random occasions to perform together, the two discovered their striking similarities in musical styles and interests. As a result, they decided to join in a formal partnership in the Fall of 2003. And there was much rejoicing!
Now, they needed a name.
After digging through hundreds of options, an audience vote at a show in Knoxville produced the moniker "The Graceful Failures." Being neither entirely graceful nor prone to failure, both ScottSki and Jean-Louis thought it would be a perfect name for their project. And once again, there was much rejoicing!
ScottSki, an award-winning poet and songwriter, has been an active member of the Knoxville music scene since 1993. He is also currently a member of the group Absolute Wood , with vocalist/guitarist Matt Woods from the band Plan A . In addition, he completed his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in August 2007. Go check out ScottSki's music space or ScottSki's personal space for more info.
Jean-Louis, a former military brat and professional athlete with previously-hidden songwriting talents, struck out on the Knoxville scene in the new century, and also currently performs with Knoxville musicians Jason Ellis and Curtis Anderson on a frequent basis.
In 2007, Scott and Jean-Louis have been joined by longtime friend Tod Sheley , who returned to Knoxville after a six-year run in Nashville, TN. Tod's powerful percussion style adds a new dimension to The Graceful Failures sound, and he will be performing with them frequently throughout the Knoxville area.
A review of The Graceful Failures on download.com pointed out their "great guitar & vocals," and added that "if you enjoy listening to harmonized male vocalists accompanied by superb acoustic guitar playing, these guys are for you."
With a mixture of styles and influences brought to the table, The Graceful Failures offer a unique blend of intelligent vocals and mood-influencing music to the acoustic scene.
