There was this one, special moment, when Juri picked up his acoustic guitar in our rehearsal room, that freaked me out. He just strummed around a bit with the volume control off, then suddenly turned the volume on and hit the strings with a g-major. In that instant I was totally awake. You know, really awake, one moment where you are truly aware that you’re alive. There was nothing really special about what Juri was doing, he just played a simple chord, but I wasn’t prepared for the loudness. That moment must have been two years ago, more or less, back when we started the band. These moments, when music makes you feel alive, suddenly strike you like lightning, give you goosebumps - call this intensity what you will - they don’t happen that often in everyday life. I guess I had them when my mother took me with her to a Springsteen concert when I was eleven, I had them when I first heard Radiohead back in the nineties, but since we've been playing our songs I get them more and more and I know that everyone in The Charcoal Sunset gets them when I look in the faces of Juri, Norman and Zip while playing - whether on stage or in the rehearsal room. And I know we all got really addicted to it. I guess that’s what it’s all about, we play - I know this may sound pathetic, but it isn’t – we play for our lives, for being alive, even if it is just in the twinkling of an eye. I believe you can only have this really satisfying effect with music, ‘cos you know you’re taking part in something that kicks ass, you are creating it in the same moment that it strikes back at you. Creating it, amplifying it and getting feedback from it. These are the blessed moments when you’re out of this world, out of the daily grind and its dictate of hiding your feelings behind irony, into something more real, something more important.
