Type I (or juvenile) diabetes is caused by the destruction of insulin producing (beta) cells in the pancreas. People with this type of diabetes MUST inject insulin into their bodies to stay alive. These injections are taken 2 to 4 times a day or continuously through an insulin " pump ".
They also must draw blood 4 or more times per day (usually by pricking a finger) for glucose testing .
