Complete Discography at REA Engineering dotcom
Welcome to my biography. My name is Roger Arnold. I am a Recording, Mixing and Mastering Engineer of Music and Sound. Engineering is my Profession. Production is my focus. Writing and Performing is my hobby.
For as long as I can remember music and technology has been a major part of what I am all about. From banging on my mom’s Tupperware containers to Peter Frampton Comes Alive at age five, to repairing an old Sony 1/4†open reel recorder by age ten, I have always had a thirst for music and the technology that surrounds it. My first real instrument was the clarinet. I had the choice of the clarinet or the flute because these were the instruments my older sisters attempted as they were growing up. Then I picked up a cheap drum set when I was ten. So cheap, I paid ten bucks for the snare drum, and picked up the rest from a friend who was moving and didn’t want it anymore. Throughout elementary school and junior high I played clarinet for the school concert band and orchestra. And in junior high I made a deal with my band instructor to teach me drums in turn for continuing to play clarinet for the orchestra. I just didn’t find the clarinet to be as cool as the drums. During high school I played drums in the high school marching band, concert band and orchestra. I also took on musicals doing six between high school and summer theater as a percussionist. Even though I had so much musical performance experience, I still felt the need to get into the technology side of music. During high school I ended up being a DJ for many of the school oriented gatherings and also a sound engineer for many of the bands. In fact, I did sound for more rock bands than I played in. I was very fortunate in high school to have many electronic music, music theory, and computer courses to give me a strong background in music technology. I am a real musician, not just a drummer. I can read and write.Â
Next I found myself at the University of New Haven, in Connecticut, studying Music and Sound Recording while focusing on music theory, orchestration and performance. I have to admit, I may not be the greatest player, but I know how to make it sound great sonically and musically. During my junior year at New Haven, I secured an Assistant Engineer’s position at a local studio and quickly fell in love with the atmosphere of music production. For most of my senior year at UNH, I was a major contributor in the construction and installation of a world class recording studio (World Studio Group member Presence Studio’s, Westport) It was Presence Studio’s big move from the local band market, to national acts with quite a bit of corporate voice over and video layback work. I really had to be on my toes working with the likes of Producers Nile Rodgers, Danny Kortchmar, Pip Williams and Artists like Donna Summer and Jose’ Feliciano. The Nile Rodgers’ production team was impressed enough with my work that they hired me outside of the studio to work in Le’ Crib, Nile’s production studio.
In the latter part of the 90’s I began to focus on my independence. I joined Horizon Music Group, a recording studio in West Haven, CT where I began to diversify my talents by working on just about anything I could get my hands on. From Hip-Hop to Blues to A Cappella to Rock to Gospel, I started to make my mark in the Music Industry as a well-respected Studio Engineer. Now I could start focusing on Production and Artist Development in hopes of molding the future of music and possibly make history in the process. My time with Horizon has also introduced me to the music of Yale University. I am responsible for producing some of the finest Collegiate A Cappella CDs in the world, my most notable group being the infamous Yale Whiffenpoofs.
The technological side of the Music Industry has changed dramatically in the past twenty years, and I have had to stay on the cutting edge of that technology to maintain my ability to compete with others in The Biz. Since the development of Digital Audio, the way in which we go about making records (CDs) has completely changed. The basics are the same, but the techniques of how audio can be manipulated have changed tenfold. I believe that these changes happening during my own development as an Engineer has helped me to become a Premier Recording, Editing, Mixing and Mastering Engineer in Connecticut. So much so that in 2006 I was acquired by the University of New Haven to teach in their Music & Sound Recording Program. I teach everything from Acoustics and Critical Listening, to Microphone Design and Placement, to Digital Audio Workstations Operation and Installation.
As an engineer, there isn't much that I can't handle. I have experience in all aspects of engineering including mixing for video, digital editing, studio design and installation, and live recording. Hey, I can even cut acetate. And if I don't know, I'll figure it out.....
Let me know how I can help you..
