I opened this myspace page as I realised my music listening has been narrowing lately, and a mate recommended this as a way of turning the tide.I'm both a composer - mostly tv soundtrack workand a film editor - cutting tv drama and feature films.
Here's a combined cv:My earliest experiences of film involved trying to run Keystone Cops shorts at 8 fps on a Eumig 8mm projector at the same time as playing Wagner 78s at 33rpm after which I inevitably felt a little depressed. After playing in bands I studied music at York University which exposed me to a large volume of naked underwater cello pieces and deafening discordant orchestral music. I conducted a performance of Gavin Bryars’ “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet” with live orchestra, tape and Stephen Dwoskin’s accompanying film. My graduation piece, “Vex and Silence” , was performed by a 60-piece orchestra in 1984.After a year-long training as an assistant film editor at the BBC in Ealing Studios, I worked for five years as a sound editor. I brought Percy Edwards out of retirement to provide gorilla noises for Philip Saville’s “First Born.” 35mm work included Stephen Poliakoff’s “She’s Been Away” and Lesley Megahey’s BBC/Miramax feature “Hour of the Pig”Cutting music documentaries for the BBC was the next step - for the series Masterworks I had to assemble performances such as Birtwistle’s “Triumph of Time” for Barrie Gavin and Vaughan Williams’ “Tallis Fantasy” for director Peter Maniura, for whom I also cut the 90-minute documentary profile "Solti - The Making of a Maestro" that was conductor Georg Solti’s final project.Producer, Laura Mackie gave me my first break into drama editing, letting me loose on Julian Farino’s “Out of The Blue.” Comedy work followed: “In The Red” for Marcus Mortimer followed 6 episodes of David Renwick’s “Jonathan Creek.”I left the BBC in 1998 and my first freelance job was TV drama series “The Lakes" for Bill Anderson ... soon followed by “Sword of Honour,” (starring Daniel Craig) “Fields of Gold,” (also for Bill Anderson) and “The Secret World of Michael Fry” for Marc Munden.I kept my composing hand in throughout the 1990s, writing music for countless miserable Channel 4 documentaries, and providing, amongst other things, trombone slides whenever someone’s trousers fell down in dozens of children’s programmes. My theme tune for "Rolf on Art" has been played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra live in Trafalgar Square.I first edited a feature film in 2001 – “Tabloid” starring John Hurt, for director David Blair – a thriller charting the fall from grace of a sensationalist TV celeb. Soon afterwards ITV blockbuster “Zhivago” (starring Keira Knightley and Sam Neill) introduced me to Italian features director Giacomo Campiotti Giacomo invited me to Rome to cut his Italian language feature film “Mai + come prima” in 2005, a coming-of-ager set amongst the perilous mountain-tops of The Dolomites.Meanwhile, I realised a long term composing ambition when I wrote the orchestral score for Dan Percival’s TV drama “Dirty War” in 2004 for BBC/HBO.Editing credits include “Coup!” (on the Mark Thatcher attempted take-over of Equatorial Guinea) and “Eroica” (a dramatization of the first rehearsal of Beethoven’s Symphony) – both for director Simon Cellan Jones. In 2006 I cut the BBC’s Elizabeth I drama series “The Virgin Queen” for Coky Giedroyc, starring Anne-Marie Duff and Tom Hardy.2007 was really busy. I worked my way through the music for a 44-part CBBC series "Fun with Phonics" and the music for two documentaries about Au Pairs for Hilary Clarke and North One TV. I wrote the music for Hilary's series "Bad Behaviour" a couple of years ago.I completed the BBC Films/Warp/Pathé feature film “Grow Your Own” for writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce and director Richard Laxton. Straight afterwards I cut “The Escapist” – a prison break feature film starring Brian Cox and Joseph Fiennes, for director/writer Rupert Wyatt. It did fabulously at Sundance and will be shown widely in the UK in June 2008
