No one knows yet what The Academy did to her before her brother Simon stole her back, because she's still too traumatized to tell them.

------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------- River was born with a mind of unparalelled brilliance. While Simon was smart enough to become a gifted doctor in the top 3% of his class at the finest medical institution, River was so bright she corrected her older brother's spelling by the time she was three years old, and even found mathematical errors in his textbooks. Their parents spoiled them and lavished them with luxuries, even signing River up for the most challenging of education programs: The Academy. Simon and his parents thought nothing of it; she was an exceptional child and belonged in an educational institution that could cater to her needs—but after a few months, Simon received a perplexing letter from her. There were misspellings and references to individuals who did not exist, to events which never happened. Simon theorized that the letter was written in some kind of code. His parents refused to take Simon's fears seriously, believing River was just being playful and Simon was irrationally overreacting to River's absence. They were wrong.
------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------- While her family thought she was safe, The Academy was actually a scientific installation (likely funded by the Blue Sun corporation). Simon decoded his sister's letters and set out to try to get her back, seeking someone, anyone—even those living in Blackout Zones—who could help him help his sister escape. Money changed hands, and soon thereafter Simon found himself captured by the local federal authorities—his father had to come down to bail him out. Upset that bailing his son out had tarnished his reputation, Gabriel Tam told Simon to give up his ridiculous mission, and Simon cut his ties to his parents by refusing to do so.

------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------- Simon made arrangements for stealing River from The Academy, then made his way to Persephone and the Eavesdown Docks slums. There, he met with the people delivering cargo containing his sister in stasis from which she was later awakened on the Firefly Transport Serenity. Blue Sun still considers River their property, and they will stop at nothing to get River back.
------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------- Unfortunately, exactly what River is now remains uncertain. River's brain was operated on countless times while The Academy had her in its clutches, and she was treated for all intents and purposes like a laboratory animal. Simon was able to perform diagnostic tests and now knows for certain that, among other things, they cut into her brain multiple times. They even stripped her amygdala, which is a part of the brain used to control emotional responses and 'filter' incoming information. SIMON TAM ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ Once a talented trauma surgeon on Osiris, Simon Tam now finds himself on Serenity, serving as the ship's medic.
Both Simon and his sister River are fugitives from the Alliance, following River’s escape from The Academy. While Serenity's crew resupplies and looks for work on Persephone, Simon boards as a passenger (with River in stasis, concealed in a container). When River is prematurely revived while the ship is underway, Simon strikes a bargain with Serenity's captain, Malcolm Reynolds: serve as medic and keep on the move, or get off at the nearest planet, hospitable or not.
Although bound by the Hippocratic Oath (First, do no harm...), there are no limits to what Simon will do to protect his sister. It was at great personal expense that he coordinated her escape from The Academy, going so far as to spend his fortune, abandon his career, and defy his parents to ensure her survival.
Simon's refined upbringing doesn't offer much to help Simon ingratiate himself with the crew, but he's nearly indispensible as a medic on a ship whose crew gets into as many scrapes as Serenity's crew does. In spite of their differences, he's managed to fit in with this band of misfits.

Chase Kavani
Chase is your average old world vampire- vicious, ancient, and bloodthirsty. He comes from a rather prominent bloodline, known for uncharacteristic kindness and a number of other unique traits, though he was never taught in their ways. Abandoned shortly after his making. Yet, unlike the majority of his vampiric kin, he gets his kicks by preying on the helpless and hopeless messes that hang out at vampire clubs. He gave little affection or mercy to those who he deemed unworthy by the merit of being in such a location by choice in the first place.
But the last thing he expected was to meet Gemini. She was fragile, broken and a complete mess, and Chase suddenly found it endearing. Growing oddly protective and in some light, posessive, he began requesting to know if and when she came in. And if anyone other than him touched her, Chase would killed him. She balanced his vicious nature, and gave him something to live for other than blood. When she took him for her lover, he was already obsessed with her. He knew all too well about her partner, and has been searching for a way to get Braxton out of his love's life without destroying Gemini even more. Now, he's searching for a way to save her from herself, and prove to Gemini that he's the one for her.
They're not a tradtional couple by any stretch of the imagination, and at times, downright unbearable to witness. At times, they're snarky and vicious to each other. They scream and fight one minute but the next they're so lovey that it makes people sick. Chase and Gemini thrive off each other. They balance each other out and bring each other out of their shells. Normally Gemini's a mess, but when she's with Chase she's actually lucid and more herself than she's been in years. And the only time that Chase is anything other than a heartless killer is when he's with Gemini. She's his soul, and the only person in this world he actually cares about. Despite the harsh words and fists they often exchange, they're made for each other and would do anything for the other.
