maahaul [(arabic) maahaul] -- mood, atmosphere; environment (of one's upbringing).
maahaul was founded in 2005 as a collective of students of indian classical music. we have created a community to help each other stay focused on our riyaz, and help each other learn more about the various styles of our music through discussions and demonstrations with each other. our goal is to support one another in our lifelong learning, as well as create spaces for us to perform and educate. we seek an audience of other musicians as well as casual listeners who merely want to learn about indian classical music, and listen to approachable live music in a comfortable, relaxed environment.
who are we
maahaul is a collective of classical indian music students. our goal when we formed in 2005 was to get student of various disciplines and styles together to exchange knowledge and ideas about our music, to give us each a better overall understanding of the music we play. sitariyas learn more about taals from tabliyas, tabliyas learn more about raags from vocalists, carnatic musicians learn more about hindustani music and vice versa. in addition to monthly discussion groups, we get together for riyaaz on a weekly basis to keep us motivated, because we are after all, lifelong students of this music.
concert series
we organize concerts for students in our group a few times a year. the goal of these concerts are to create a space for some of the amazingly talented students in our group to perform. in addition, to create an intimate environment for an audience who wants to listen to classical music, and give them a chance to talk to members of our group before and after the concerts to help gain a greater appreciation for the music.
