LOVE OR NOTHIN’ is an outgoing and passionate work. The title is borrowed from Marlene Dietrich’s classic tune Falling In Love Again. Perhaps this single line expresses the entire emotional framework of the album: living and facing the consequences - whatever the cost.On DON’T EXPLAIN Caroline Henderson is mainly accompanied by her trio. MADE IN EUROPE showed Henderson in a fearless tour de force aided by a string orchestra. On LOVE OR NOTHIN’ Caroline Henderson’s combo is supplemented by rap, scratch and beats. Regardless of which direction Henderson chooses, it is remarkable that her own identity comes through equally powerful. Her musical expression is the sum of her many-facetted personality. As on her two previous releases, LOVE OR NOTHIN’ is permeated by Afro-American tradition. Afro-American music is still a conglomerate with roots all the way back to the Mississippi Delta more than a hundred years ago. Henderson’s talent encompasses a broad specter ranging from a deeply felt, emotional jazz standard ballad one moment to heart-rending blues or gospel the next. Hot soul, tenderness, grace, depth and vulnerability, but also deep swing - laid-back, cool beats alongside new interpretations of rock and pop classics - all touched by the sparkle of Caroline Henderson’s talent. After all, as the first track tells us, jazz is “nothing but soul”. Jazz is not a musical style - it is a way of perceiving the world around us. It’s a life style.Caroline Henderson’s open mind is one of her qualities. LOVE OR NOTHIN’ includes new original songs, titles dug forth from the early days of jazz, a cover version of Wild is the Wind, Tom Waits’ Nobody, and the touching Go Away Little Boy. As on her two previous albums, LOVE OR NOTHIN’ features Henderson working with a small group of exceptional musicians with the intuitive ability to give her intentions life. She continues to collaborate with jazz musicians who impress us as much more than just a backing band: from Sweden, pianist and organplayer Jesper Nordenstöm; on keyborads and bandoneon, Italian Paolo Russo; bassist Anders Christensen and drummer Kresten Osgood - and not least sound technician Morten Bue, with whom the band found the gutsy live sound at the recording sessions in the Swedish Varispeed Studios. There is always room for guests on a Coroline Henderson album. She brings together artists from several generations each with a story to tell. The legendary pianist Horace Parlan is a life-long story in his own right. Joined by bassist Jesper Lundgaard, they create the foundation for Coroline’s beautiful interpretation of Everything I Have is Yours. By chance Caroline ran in to the elderly New Orleans vocalist Rocki Charles. He joins her for an expressive and playful version of What a Little Moonlight Can Do. Rapper Al Agami shows up for a guest spot on one tune, as do guitarists Niclas Knudsen and Boi Holm. The young scratcher Türkman Souljah joins in here and there, and saxophonist Søren Siegumfeldt helped out with some arrangements and a couple of new tunes.LOVE OR NOTHIN’ was released by Columbia Records on the Japanese market in April 2006. Due to the company’s successful release of MADE IN EUROPE in June 2005, they secured the rights for an early Japanese release for the new album. Caroline Henderson’s music is causing attention internationally. Domestic and international concerts are sold out, and interest and sales are on a steady rise. The autumn release of LOVE OR NOTHING will put the album in shops on the European, American and Asian markets
