The Israeli Navy ship "Eilat" was on a routine guard in the Mediterenean sea when it was attacked by Egyptian missiles.
The attack came by surprise and there was no sea battle.
In less than two hours the navy ship Eilat sunk forever, swallowed by the sea.
Many of the survivors that made it to the water, were then killed by another missile, oil, gasolin and fire. Other navy man drowned or died from exaustion.
Moshe Levy was one of the survivors of this tragedy. After swiming for nearly 8 hours in the sea, fighting for his life against the cold water, darkness and exaustion, he was rescued by the Israeli navy.
His chilling story about the personal trauma, desperation, loneliness and anxiety in those tragic night hours, are brought together in a book, written by Moshe Levy himself called "Eilat, The 48th Soul."
Navy ship Eilat-the last jurney
From the book
"At exactly 5:30 pm, the ship's captain, Brigadier/General Itzhak Shoshan, called out to Sergeant Frisher and me.
His terror-stricken call at that moment not only ended our routine and tranquility, but also the life of 47 of our crew members.
Two hours after this alarm, the sea had already claimed the battleship Eilat and many of its sailors.
This marked the beginning of the crew's courageous battle of survival on this infamous night."
My Interests
I'd like to meet:
Activists from the city of Eilat, Israel, who would work together to build a monument for the battleship Eilat.
