Kdot Linux

Fast Stable Linux for Users, Vista Replacement

About Me

I have used, worked with, and have had an absurd obsession with the Linux kernel, the Xorg windowing system (Xfree86, Xorg, etc.), unices, and general GNU/Linux operating systems for years. BSD is nice, but I prefer Linux. My goal in life is to somehow get paid for working with it in one way or another, but for now it unfortunately remains a hobby. Thus, I have decided to make my attempt at building a Linux distribution. First, some ground rules:
* It will be entirely free. I don't seek a profit.
* Anyone who has the desire and knowledge to assist the project in ANY way is welcome, just ask.
* It will focus heavily on security! This has been a shortcoming with mainstream operating systems for years, I don't intend to repeat history.
* It will be FAST! The distribution and all packages will built and optimized for specific architectures. No generic i386 optimizations here, and both older and newer systems will be supported.
* It WILL NOT be bloated. That's all I have to say about that.
* It will stay on top of current technologies, and provide an excellent user environment for both hard-core Linux users and newcomers alike. This can be done.
* It will adhere as closely as possible to POSIX and LSB standards without getting ridiculous.
* It will use KDE for the GUI. I despise building Gnome, and I despise building Gnome dependencies. KDE has a very "across-the-board" feel.
* It will have a package management system based entirely off of standard linux tools. Strict control of file permissions, users, and groups will actually allow this.
* It will be one distribution for home and office. Packages installed will vary after the base system to suit user needs, suggestions might be made during installation, but there will be no "enterprise" or "home" editions specifically; just a great operating system with many software packages available.
Currently I have built Linux From Scratch derivatives hundreds, if not thousands of times. LFS , BLFS , CLFS , and HLFS systems are excellent. However, I like to break away from their convention frequently and usually end up with quite a different system. Time for something new. Yes it will be largely based on my previous experience with Linux From Scratch systems, but I expect it to grow into it's own entity quickly. This is my rough draft for the beginning of Kdot Linux, I hope to hear from Linux fanatics soon! Please send a message introducing yourself before you add me, so I don't have to weed through as much spam.
