About Me

Before becoming a musician Matt Telfer had a successful and prosperous career in property. With a degree in communication and business studies Matt worked for one of the Europe’s leading property companies and specialised in acquiring executive properties.Matt eventually became bored and frustrated with the business world and longed for a more creative life. It was at a property auction that Matt discovered an old sax hidden in the attic of a derelict house. The sax was a Grafton, a rare and collectable sax constructed mainly from plastic. The Grafton became famous when players such as Charlie Parker and Ornett Coleman began to use it.Fascinated with the old sax Matt had it repaired and then taught himself to play by listening to recordings of the jazz masters. The property world seemed even more pointless and materialistic so Matt left his job and moved to London to explore the music scene and take his musical studies to the next level.Unable to finance music college Matt would spend all day practicing and the evenings watching other players. While teaching himself Matt worked for TW Howarth of London, the woodwind specialist. Tim Garland, Mornington Lockett, Courtney Pine, Julian Seagul, Dave Liebman, Michael Brecker, Jean Toussaint, Tony Koffi, Bob Mintzer, Phil Woods were just a few of the saxophonists that would regularly visit Howarth. Matt became good friends with many of these guys and regularly visited them for lessons and guidance. A strict practise regime with regular guidance has started to pay off.A few years on…………Matt performs regularly through out the UK and Europe with various artists and his own group.Matt has performed with Rose Royce’s Gwen Dickey, supported Tony Bennett, and performed at most of the UK’s popular venues and music events, including Jools Holland’s Jam House Birmingham, Jazz Café Camden, Ronnie Scotts, Hardrock Café London, The Royal Festival Birmingham, The Cinnamon Club, Nottingham and Manchester, The Notting Hill carnival, Soho Jazz festival, BBC music live programme, Pigale club Piccadilly Circus and many more. Matt can also be heard on many recordings for Television and radio. Matt Telfer is an endorsee of Yanagisawa neck pipes. www.yanagisawa.co.jp/en/ Previously a tinnitus sufferer, Matt has just completed a course in anatomy, pathology and physiology and is now training as a Cranio-Sacral therapist so he can treat people with tinnitus.
