Mother and Father of musicians Michael and Billy Sherwood. Also aunt and uncle of Jazz trumpet player Carl Saunders. Bobby Sherwood was a guitarist for MGM and strummed behind Bing Crosby replacing Eddie Lang in the 30's. Soon he became a Big-Band leader in the 40's, fronting his own "Bobby Sherwood Orchestra" playing trumpet, guitar, piano and vocalizing with his two sisters Caroline and Gayle (Carl's mother) in "The Skylarks". A four piece singing group who's male members names escape me. Bobby settled in Las Vegas in the early 60's and married a broadway dancer 20 years his Jr. Her name was (and still is) Phyllis. Together they formed a family and a swinging lounge act which lasted until 1977. Phyllis played vibes drums and sang her ass off. At the tender age of 15, Michael and his long-time friend Jimmy Haun, joined the act. (Billy was spotted on conga drum from time to time when he was a mere 11 years old.) Bobby passed away in Jan 1981. Phyllis was still dancing in "The Palm Spring Follies" well into her 60's. "Each leg is 31", she used to tell us. Michael, Billy and cousin Carl continue to carry the musical torch. The newest generation of music comes from the outstanding singer songwriter "Audra Mae" who's grandfather, "Dennis Havens", was the bass player for Phyllis and Bobby during this period. Bobby was married to Judy Garland's sister "Virginia Gumm" in the 30's. From that marriage came our 1/2 sister Judaline. "Audra Mae" is a product of solid musical genes. Las Vegas really was a swinging place to grow up, baby! MS 2007Â
