RIM RIPPER, RIM ROLLER...WHICH IS IT?
If you are reading this page, you have most likely seen or heard of a new little device for unrolling the irritating rim on a certain coffee chain’s contest cups. I have created this website to tell the truth about how the “Rim Roller” (or as we have always called it, “Rim Ripper”) came to be.
There is a gentleman who has been all over the news lately promoting the Rim Roller, claiming that he is the inventor of this product and that he has spent the past three years developing it. Unfortunately for this unnamed gentleman, we beat him to it. Unfortunately for us, there are pesky technicalities.
WOULD THE REAL INVENTOR PLEASE STAND UP
In January of 2000 to make ends meet, Paul Accadia held a job as a taxicab driver in Burlington, Ontario. During a major coffee & donut chains’ promotional contest, Paul would hear passenger’s countless complaints of how difficult & annoying rolling up the coffee-cup rim was. Being a thinker and visionary, he was determined to design a solution to this problem. He created a few simple sketches, designed a feasible model and contacted his long-time friend James Barlow for advice. The two spent many hours refining the design and discussing marketing & manufacturing possibilities. By the summer of 2001 Paul & Jamie created a few working prototypes and contacted the Hamilton Ontario office of Gowling-Lafleur-Henderson to apply for a patent to secure their new invention. By February 7, 2002, they had received a “draft” copy of the patent application, prepared by Gowlings. Paul & Jamie moved quickly and had the patent application officially submitted with the Canadian Patent Office on February 19, 2002.

WHO ON EARTH WOULD WANT THIS THING
Now that they officially could use the term “patent-pending” and felt protected enough to start investigating prospective business avenues, the two set out to meet with manufacturers and possible customers. They poured countless hours and thousands of dollars into developing electronic media presentations, paper literature and more working prototypes. They conducted presentations, shot video and compiled stacks of testimonials from early beta testers.
THE BIG MEETING
In August 2002, Paul & Jamie finally got their big break and were granted a meeting with Canada’s largest coffee & donut retailer. Unfortunately management could not see the massive potential associated with adopting this type of marketing item. By October 2002, they had received a refusal letter but decided to press on.....the rest of this story is now on www.rimripper.com...
