What began in the Fall of 2002, as loft party above a night club in Lakeview, was really the birth of Slower, masquerading as party favors. It was there that two individuals would create the game plan for Slower and many other projects that would follow suit.
It was Max’s loft that was owned, coincidently by the landlord that I rented my property from (David Gasman). And was that particular night that Max showed me a 6 song demo that immediately resonated with me.
“You guys recorded this?â€
“Yeah, we did it when Ryan and I were freshman in college.â€
I was captivated by the guitar melodies - they really spoke to me.
They were kind of poppy but very honest in a Jimmy Eat World kind of way.
“Who’s Ryan?â€
“Oh, Ryan goes to Columbia as well.â€
“I’ll have to introduce you two.â€
Slower formed with the hope to create something independent of all other genres or musical feats at that moment in time. Many members of the band listened to contemporaries like Cursive, Mogwai, and Far while the others heard the complexities of Bella Fleck and the Flecktones, Meshuggah, and Tool. The result of the mixed influences was something that could be defined as popesque' in nature while still maintaining the honesty and desire to capture the unsound forces of nature.
Over Black Skies, Skyline, and With Blood Soaked Hands were culminated from the ashes of Slower, all falling to the wayside. These three bands that followed should not be disregaurded as mere side projects. They were full of anger and extasis and provided an outlet and path for their members who have survived their musical roots and are currently working in the scene today.
Since I last heard, Ryan and Paul (O.B.S) are playing guitar in White Hot Knife and Brandon sings for Doctor, This Virus is Silence. At this time it is unknown as to what the other guys are doing - if anyone knows please email me for an update.
