With a DJ career that spans well over two decades (he started DJing at 16) and a passion for music that surpasses most of us mere mortals. Rob Milton is best known in the UK & London for his part as co-founder and original DJ at the infamous Dirt Box parties that were notorious for their hit and run guerrilla tactics in the halcyon days of London club culture. No venue was safe from the back to basics ethics of Phil & Rob Dirt Box. From it’s humble beginnings in a strip club above an all night chemist in Earls Court they quickly established a “back to basics” following from London’s hippest clubbers. Bring your own booze and do your own thing!Immortalised in the Face magazine by Robert Elms the Dirt Box spawned a generation of DIY parties and dress down fashion. From warehouse to strip club to nightclub-they went anywhere they could set up a sound system and invite their mates. It was like a house party on tour and everyone knew everyone. The Dirt Box even travelled to Bournemouth for the bank holiday weekends and managed to entice a large following of revellers from the big smoke. But all good things come to an end and after three years of hedonism the Dirt Box duo went their seperate ways with Rob getting more and more DJ bookings at other venues.Soon he had Saturday night residencies at Raw (with Dave Dorrell) at the YMCA in Tottenham Court Road and the Warehouse @ the Electric Ballroom in Camden. And regular guest spots at Philip Salon’s Mud Club, the Wag, Le Beat Route ,Gossips, Legends and numerous one-off parties and club nights in the capital as well as regular spots in Brighton & Manchester.A desire for something different lead Rob to try his luck on the other side of the world and in 1988 left London for Australia…In Sydney Rob is best known for his part as co-promoter and resident DJ of Sydney’s infamous Kings Cross club the Underground Café. The late lamented HIGH TIMES & DELICIOUS nights were two of the most popular club nights in Sydney’s clubbing history. They were the epitome of all that was good about the house scene - no hype, no bulls**t , just pure sexy house! Both nights ran for an incredible six years from 1995-2001 and were constantly voted in the top three club nights in Sydney, with Rob being touted as one of the best “funky” house DJs in After emigrating to Sydney he was responsible for setting up the LOVE parties with Sugar Ray, which paved the way for the huge Sydney house scene in the early Nineties. He also returned to his funk and soul roots and helped dish out the ultra funky rare grooves at the late lamented Funk Inc parties- a style which he still loves to play.Over the years Rob has played at most major Sydney clubs and bars as well as touring throughout Australia on a nationwide “Delicious” tour which also took in an extensive tour of New Zealand. Plus gigs in the UK, Europe and Asia. After the closure of the Underground Rob took up resident DJ slots at Home and Yu as well as guest spots at clubs all over town. Also a regular on Sydney’s airwaves – hosting his own daily afternoon shows on Radio Dex and Rhythm FM.He then immersed himself into music production releasing two of Australia’s biggest house tracks co written and produced with GT (Groove Terminator) - the anthemic (and still much sort after) “Same Old Thing” by LOVERUSH (voted Australian dance track of the year by 3D magazine) and the excellent follow up “Love 2 See Ya (Dancin’)”. Both tracks were picked up for release in the UK on Credence and Azuli records respectively.Rob went back to his funk and disco roots and put together the essential “GROOVE ORIGINALS” Volumes 1 & 2 - compilation series for Festival and Crash Bang records. Which consisted of those original soul/funk and disco tunes that were being sampled for today’s dance tracks. Which was a formula that preceded the huge influx of similar compilations from around the world.Recently Rob has been taking more time out in the studio to record an album and single projects. First up is a brand new single release forthcoming on Ministry of Sound/Hussle records. “Keep it Right There” by ULTRAPHONIC (co written with Sydney producer Tony Vass) which encompasses all the essential ingredients that makes you wanna dance your ass off – which is all together an apt description of his DJ sets. Rob is currently back in the UK putting the finishing touches to a few current music production projects. Expect some new quality releases very soon! ------------------------------------------------------ Some of the Legendary DJs I have had the pleasure of playing with over the years: Norman Jay, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Dave Dorrell, CJ MacIntosh, Jeremy Healey, Rob Tissera, Mark Moore, Mark Luvdup, Giles Peterson, Paul 'Trouble' Anderson, Farley & Heller, Ashley Beadle, Gordon Kaye, Ben & Andy (Boilerhouse),Nicky Holloway, Pete Tong, Andy Morris, Basement Jaxx, Run DMC, Chris & James, Future Funk, Deep Dish ,Colin Dale, Roy The Roach, Dean Thatcher, Linden C, Phil Perry, Paul Bleasdale, Huggy & Ralph Lawson, Kelvin Andrews (Sure Is Pure), Rocky & Diesel, Deep Dish, Alex P, Brandon Block, Stretch & Vern and so many more…

My Interests

Music:

Influences: I have loved music since I can remember, growing up listening to my brother and sisters 60's pop and soul music collection. Apparently I used to know all the words to Billy Fury's records when I was three - how and why is still a mystery. My sisters love for Motown, Atlantic, Stax and the glorious sound of soul music influenced me hugely. I was buying my own soul singles when I was 11 (the start of my obsession with buying records-vinyl junkie supreme)and spent most of my misspent youth traveling to northern soul all nighters and collecting obscure American 45's. As soon as I was old enough (!!??) I was frequenting the funk clubs listening to the likes of Kool & the Gang (can't get enough of that funky stuff!),Fatback Band, Ohio Players,George Clinton, Cameo, Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds. The funk got me!! Of course I went through my pop phase and David Bowie was a big hero of mine and still is -hell I wouldn't shave my eyebrows off for anyone else! (what was I thinking). Then along came punk- a whole new way of life, I loved the Pistols, but was more a fan of the Buzzcocks and Wire. The Clash, The Jam,Damned,Elvis Costello,XTC and loads of other bands. But I then I got the disco bug- and was busting moves on the dancefloors of the UK listening to (and buying) the US disco and jazz funk tunes of the day. The next phase was the new romantics-the new electronica- Soft Cell, Dalek I Love You, Depeche Mode,OMD,Kraftwerk,Fad Gadget...... Then resurgance and rebirth of funk and soul in the Eighties was a period I enjoyed -listening to the likes of Maze,Lonnie Liston Smith,Luther Vandross,Gil Scott Heron and numerous others. Then of course there was house music, my DJ career was established with residencies in various clubs in London and the first house record I bought in 1986 was Farley Jackmaster Funk-"Funkin' With The Drums Again" on Trax records. Big influence!! Then there was Steve 'Silk' Hurley, Frankie Knuckles and DJ international records and aciiiiiid! I'll stop there cos there has been so much great music that it's impossible to list all the artists and songs, but heres a few more who have helped me on my journey through life so far..Stevie Wonder (genius!),David Bowie,Roy Ayers,Beth Orton,Everything But The Girl,The Beloved,Coldplay,The Doves,Bob Marley,Roxy Music, the Cafe Del Mar series,The Doors,Van Morrison,Angie Stone,Amp Fiddler, Snoop Dogg,De La Soul,Brand New Heavies,Jill Scott, Aretha Franklin,Isley Brothers, everything Motown including the legendary Funk Brothers,Staple Singers,Chi-Lites,Bobby Womack,Al Green,Sade.... the list is endless.
Sounds Like: House music mostly! New tracks forthcoming under my ambient and chill out persona - Quixote.
