Andy Johnson - Composer/Singer Songwriter/Producer

About Me

Andy was born and raised in Birmingham, and was primarily a self taught musician up until the age of 14 when his prodigious talent at the keyboard was recognized by tutors from Birmingham Conservatoire. He undertook four rigorous years of training by a number of piano pedagogues, and received training in composition, a discipline in which he also excelled. In 2006 Andy graduated from The London College of Music with a first class BA Honours degree in both Music Technology and Music Composition. He was trained by Dr. Laurence Roman, the illustrious arranger and long time musical assistant to Andrew Lloyd Webber, in all areas of composition, harmony, and orchestration. Notable competition successes include first prize in the Primrose Quartet Competition, winner of the Albert Thomas Howard Composition Prize, and first prizewinner of the Concerto Competition for his sparkling performance of Mozart’s 23rd Piano Concerto. His ability at the piano and his flair for improvisation and melodic composition naturally drew him to the world of film, a genre in which his music was most able to communicate. Andy’s music has a special visual quality to it, and for this reason many directors have sought him out for collaboration, to enhance and to add a new dimension to their own work. Shortly after graduation Andy arranged music from the blockbuster film, Gladiator, as part of The London Charity Orchestra’s annual concert, receiving permission from Hans Zimmer himself for this special commission. In 2007 Andy scored the music for eight short films, and has numerous projects planned for the coming months. In March he was asked to compose the music for two new plays, written by Robin French, who was recently chosen by The Observer as one of Britain’s up and coming talents. To date, Andy has worked with graduate directors from Goldsmiths, Westminster University, The London Film Academy, Thames Valley University, Bournemouth Media School, Columbia Film School, NY, as well independent filmmakers seeking his diverse range of mood, his emotional depth, and the sensitivity of his sonic palette. In 2008 Andy was invited to join Ilan Eshkeri, composer of the recent film Stardust, and also Hannibal Rising, Layer Cake, The Count of Monte Cristo, at his studio facility in West London. From this base Andy is in an enviable position to work with some of the leading figures in the film industry, and to gain first hand experience and exposure to some of the UK’s biggest film productions.
