Tinkuna was formed by Victor Monasterio and Carlos Ponce one fine saturday afternoon in 1992. Not paying attention to a futbol game in full swing, Carlos and Victor discussed the creation of a music group to express la pasion boliviana.
Miguel Ledesma and Marcelo Robalino joined soon after, and took it upon themselves to execute the fine art of music performance through busking.
Tinkuna was seen every sunday at sydney's Circular Quay, pounding the Bombo, blowing Zampoñas and strumming their strung instruments to the furore of the crowds.
Some time later, Enrique Berbis joined Tinkuna, and the quintet recorded the album Tuta Runas, which means night men, and indeed night owls would have been appropriate since they expended many nights in their company playing music and cards.
Tinkuna decided to take a break 10 years ago, and since Victor Monasterio has continued writing music and performing as a solo artist, and with his brothers under thename of Iskaio-Orko.
You may wish to check out Victor's page on the web by visiting VICTOR MONASTERIO'S BLOG Here you may download Victor's music, much of which is based on traditional Bolivian rhythms and instruments. Argentinian Zambas feature also.
Meanwhile, Tinkuna waits patiently to resume Pachamama's calling... to play the music which belongs to earth, wind, fire, water, and the divine elements which have made all this possible. No other task is of greater honour. Stay tuned.
