About Me

I'm a Midwestern transplant, but LA has become home. Born in Minnesota, grew up in Iowa, and fully acclimated to California. Came to LA to attend grad school at USC, and now I work in editorial at a comic book publisher.

My Interests

Movies are kind of a given. Comics, obviously. I also enjoy reading a wide variety of fiction without pictures, from James Joyce to Harry Potter. I occasionally sit down with a book of poetry, usually something standard like Frost. I like living in Los Angeles, but I can't live without nature. My dog and I go camping, fishing, and hiking a lot. He mostly watches with the fishing. Not having opposable thumbs makes reeling difficult. Come to think of it, he's not much help setting up the tent either, the lazy bastard. He's good company, though. What else? I play poker. A lot. But I don't lose money, so technically, I don't think you'd say I have a gambling problem. I mean, if I wasn't good at it, I wouldn't play. I don't understand people who consistently lose at gambling but keep playing. How's that saying go? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Music:

Anything but country.

Movies:

This is such a broad category, but I suppose I can narrow it down to a few of the less mainstream ones that actually say something about me. Comedy. Who doesn't like comedy? Aside from all the usual suspects, I'm a big fan of the Monty Python movies. All of them, not just Holy Grail. If you haven't seen The Meaning of Life, you need to. Also a fan of Mel Brooks. Young Frankenstein is a must see for everyone I know. I'm into cheesy horror (and not-so-cheesy). I can recommend one in particular that doesn't get enough credit. Demon Knight, starring William Saddler, Jada Pinkett Smith, and the incomparable Billy Zane in what is by far his best performance. No one ever watches it, because it's a Tales from the Crypt movie. Justifiable, I suppose, if they happen to have watched the Dennis Miller crapfest that followed Demon Knight. Still, worth watching if for no other reason than to see Zane in a great role. Comic Book movies. X-Men, Spider-Man, Hellboy...I'll watch any comic book movie. Even the crappy ones like Elektra and LXG. I love classic movies. I remember when I first discovered AMC and Turner Classic Movies. I spent weeks one summer just watching those channels. It was amazing. We go to all these movies in the theaters, hoping to see a good film, and once in a while we find one. But that's what, a couple times a year? There's a century worth of good films that most people have never seen. You turn on AMC, and it's all the best films, all in one place. What could be better?A few more I would recommend, off the top of my head, are Sex, Lies, and Videotape, The Limey, The Princess Bride, and The Ninth Gate. I'm sure I'll add more to this, as I think of it. Profiles like this are a process, you know?

Television:

Guy Fawkes

I missed it.  I can't believe I fucking forgot about Guy Fawkes Day.  Last year, we threw a huge party for the holiday, complete with effigies, flaming shots, and second degree burns.  ...
